Strawberries are something you absolutely can (and do) freeze! Of course you cut or slice them first, and then expect to use them for cheesecake topping. ;)
What's a runner bean? Just a green bean?
Frozen green beans that you buy are kinda weird. They squeak.
I thought a broad bean was one of the legume kinds, dried like kidney beans ...

Yep..Runner Bean is a long green bean rather like a French bean ,but much nicer. And you are right Janey ,they do kind of squeak when cooked after being frozen.
Broad bean is a kind of green Red Kidney bean...
Goggle is good for finding the info if you want it on different kinds of beans..:))

I have just heard on the TV that WE /Britain are going to be paying 12 MILLION POUNDS plus more prob towards the Pope coming here for 4 DAYS.!!
The Church is going to be paying a similar figure so about 24 MILLION in all for 4 DAYS.
Now why does he not just stay home and we and the church give the money to some of the disaster zones that need it? Surely that would be a much better thing to do with the money as anyone here who wants to see the Pope can just go to Rome and see him on one of his public appearances.
Same as I think that every footballer/celeb/fat cat etc over a certain amount of earnings of mega bucks should give a months wages per year to disaster zones around the world. It would make much more of a difference than my paltry few pounds that I can give.
Now I guess I will be reported for disrespecting the RC church, which I am not ,just voicing my opinion on where the money could be better spent than on a visit here..

I agree Fans
Not going to get into a religious arguement with anyone, but it does seem a waste of money.

I would be saying it whatever the religion Ja...x,or if it was heads of States etc.
It makes me sick when I hear how much money footballers/celebs etc are paid and how much clubs pay for a footballer or a racehorse owner will pay for its training or purchase etc when there are starving dying children in the world and people living under makeshift tents etc with babes to fend for and no way to feed them.
I know things will not change and we will always have the haves and have nots. The other day a woman was crying on the local news that she did not think she could cope as the ground floor of her house had been flooded and then we go straight to the national news and see Pakistan...
Its not as though she had nothing left,I know thats not a nice thing for me to say,but she has at least still got a home and clean water and no fear of Cholera or Typhoid.
Sorry rant over......

Good old Dermot has already had a thread going on Chat for weeks about Ratzinger dropping by.
Here's the real problem. The Vatican is supposedly a "state". It has semi-official status at the UN. So the Pope isn't just a bunch of people's religious leader, he's sort of half a head of state. This has all sorts of ugly consequences, like this kind of waste of money, and the Vatican teaming up with Taliban-like states to prevent women in the developing world from getting decent health care ...
What needs to be done is abolish the status of the Vatican as anything other than one church like the rest of 'em.
www.seechange.org as I recall -- lemme check ... yup.
"Hundreds of organizations and thousands of people worldwide have initiated a campaign to change the status of the Roman Catholic church at the United Nations. Concerned that the church has flown in under UN radar by calling itself the Holy See, we have called on the Secretary-General to review the church's current status as a Non-member State Permanent Observer. We believe that the Holy See, the government of the Roman Catholic church, should participate in the UN in the same way as the world's other religions do—as a non-governmental organization."
And that goes in spades for the Lama person, too. And any other anyone who derives their authority from a religion.
Hmm .. I guess that includes HM ...

Apparently many RC people here dont think he should come as the church has to pay up as well and with the economic climate they think it is wrong to be spending the churches money on it. It is now feared that there will be protests and that will of course cost even more taxpayers money. Im not good at voicing the things I think and to be honest it is HID who watches all the Newsnight programmes and political things ,not me,I just listen in to the bits that interest me.
But I think that HM is a waste of money as well. Im not saying to get rid of the Monarchy but let them pay for themselves. They have plenty of their own income between them to do their ambassador bit and if they cut down on the exotic holidays between them that we help pay for I am sure they could manage on their millions. I am not adverse to keeping Buck house and the like up to scratch as its a big tourist draw but let the family keep themselves in the style to which they are accustomed, just as we do.

Must admit I haven't paid a lot of attention to the royal household's allowances and such.
That's because we here get a free ride -- she's our head of state, and we only pay to feed and house her and hers when the visit occasionally.
Mind you, we do upkeep the Governor General, but Rideau Hall isn't exactly Buck House. ;) And our GGs' spawn don't get lifetime incomes.

but how much did it cost earlier this year when HM and the Duke came to Canada?
It was some incredible amount
.............. although they did have much less security that the President of the US demands on visits to other countries
or than we had just spent on the Olympics
and yes, I do like the idea of having an apolitical Head of State like the Queen, or Governor-General as her representative.

We used to grow runner beans, and I would dip them into boiling water for 1 minute, cool rapidly in ice water, and then freeze
but I got fed up of doing it, the beans used to stay in our freezer for months longer than they should have done 'cos I would forget all about them, and they never tasted as good as when fresh anyway .............. so I stopped freezing them
and then OH stopped growing them
We no longer grow as many veggies as we used to do.
OH always plants potatoes, usually 3 - 5 rows. This year, that has given us about 45 lbs
He has 4 Tomato plants, which have stilll got to produce red fruit ... they did get a very slow start 'cos June was so cold and wet.
He also grows leeks ...... he sows the seed in the spring, lets them grow through the summer, then transplants them in September-ish into where the potatoes had been growing, and leaves them through the fall and winter. We start picking them in January or February ...... they are lovely and sweet by then.
Plus we have 3 espaliered apple trees ... the Granny Smith might be on its way to the dump though as it isn't doing well.
And 2 kiwi vines (a male and a female). We usually get 100 or more kiwis. One year OH picked almost 400 o))

Hey peeps,
You speak of the Pope, and i am one of the security for the event how weird...
700 security staff over 1 week approx, most of the week to secure the venue, ( a public park) and then 2 days to royally sh*t ourselves!
I have heard thru the grapevine radicals are planning on protesting the event.... i know i personally shall be in my stab vest that day!

Morning.
Wot no breakfast.
Shakes head in disgust. How will I surve the day?
Off to work again.
Saturdday morning I am off to Devon with N0 1 daughter SIL and grandaughter. Will be in a caravan and vising my Mum and OH.
This week I accidentally discovered her 2nd husband's grandchild. I kneew he had a son from the first marriage but he did not know any more about them. My stepfather and his parents lived a few doors away and his sister was my mum's best friend so it was natural to put them on my tree. Gotta find some pictures now.
