Sylvia -- try Harvey's if you're looking for a fast-food burger. They really are quite okay, and you do get to stand there and pick what you want on them (lettuce, tomato, onion, dill pickle, mayonnaise). And the chips and onion rings aren't bad for fast food.

I don't speak to people who eat at McDonalds, btw.

Of all the things one can do to avoid supporting US cultural/economic imperialism and the exploitation of workers, not shopping at WalMart and not eating at McDonalds are two of the really easy ones.

McDonalds put my dad out of business 35 years ago, and WalMart has put any number of local businesses out of business. Not that others don't too, but they are the pioneers and supreme practitioners of the art.

Last time I was in the US we bought beer from Wallmart and got asked for ID

....which we didnt have and only being about 44 I can see why they refused to sell it to us ;)

However.....I could buy a gun at the same store!

Janey

hasten to say that we haven't eaten at McD's for about 20 years!

and Walmart has only just recently made it into Vancouver ............ it's over on the east side somewhere

I've been into a Walmart once, with a friend, didn't buy anything, and didn't like it

Vancouver City Council held out for years about rezoning to let them come in because of the harm to local small businesses ........... but then W found some large premises in east Vancouver, already zoned for "big box" ................ and council couldn't do anything to stop them!

I don't think Harvey's is over here, may be wrong .............. but I shall look out for them, especially if you can pick your own additions. This dairy intolerance is the pits sometimes.

Even some mayonnaises can have dairy in ...... even though it isn't supposed to be an ingredient.

Sylv.....mayonnaises

I thought that was made from eggs?

Big sis (chef) makes it from egg yolks and olive oil....yum

SylviaInCanada Report 31 Aug 2010 20:38

Gins

it is indeed

but I've had the occasional problem from a mayonnaise in a cafe (eg on sushi, or other)

and have so far found one (cheap) make that says "may contain dairy"

I hasten to say that was a bottle I checked in the supermarket

I think the UK must have more stringent laws on what is or isn’t allowed on food labels

But they could be much better...as in a V or VG and DF on EVERY product

I feel for you Sylv....a nightmare

You can freeze *everything*. Some things you will wish you hadn't ... but cupcakes, definitely.

I take it FBG has found Christina Wilson in 1881.

It is so &^%$ hot and humid here right now, and me so in need of a shower, the brain is a little stewed.

If we get the tail end of the hurricane, that should cool it down. What's it called. I remember I joked about it last night. Oh yes, his name is Earl.

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 31 Aug 2010 21:43

Did find Christina.
Put her name and year of birth in with born Scotland ...and up she popped first hit !!

Goody goody,will freeze em then.

Bought loads today, lemon ones and Pecan and Caramel..yummy.

They were marked down so very cheap and still really fresh so I just could NOT resist them.

Good luck with the Horrid cane...

Gins ......... labelling of ingredients is tight over here, hence why they have to put "May contain (dairy, nuts, etc)"

This might have a "mayonnaise" that had not been caught out for not being "real" mayonnaise.

What gets me is when a manufacturer changes ingredients.

Case in point ........ a certain manufacturer makes a Lemon Tea cookie (biscuit to you). I used to be able to eat that as one of the few snacks. Then I had problems ....... turned out there were now "milk ingredients" listed

off to have my hair cut, and afternoon coffee.

Rain has eased off, still below 13C ...... OH didn't have anything else to do at the uni, so he's come home to take me there in the car, so I won't get wet!

isn't he nice?

Janey ......... I guess you might get our chilly weather in about 4 days time!

Daughter will be watching Earl closely, in case he decides to slam into NS, as Juan did back in 2004.

I always look for bargains on the bread counter Fans.....toast bread especially. Got a freezer drawerful of home grown runner beans and also locally picked blackberries. A taste of summer for later in the year.
I freeze milk too.
