And I wish people would stop banging on about immigrants in connection with this ,

I'll put money on there being less than 0.1 percent of those causing trouble being 'immigrants'... some may be 3rd generation with an immigrant background but that makes them as British as any of us. ( lol that could describe me...and to be honest I'm seriously thinking of "going back where I came from").

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 10 Aug 2011 11:59

these are not immigrants - they're home grown - the immigrants are pestering people in central London begging outside Harrods, pretending they are holding babies in their arms, which they are not - Romanians mostly

biggest mistake we made was entering the EU - now we have masses of EU people sponging off our already overloaded welfare system and the NHS

This is what happens when you allow sections of society to dictate how they are policed. Some areas (and it's true of my wider area) are no go zones. THEY dictate the terms and the police are too neutered to do anything except go along with it for fear of what these "communities"may do in a fit of temper if they don't toe the line.

it's about time the police heads stopped meeting with these people and started policing them without fear or favour

But when you have a police chief who refuses to allow his officers to go into a park after dark because of "health and safety" (i kid you not) that's never going to happen.

When i was a child I was in awe of the police. The children from the *no go* area in town laugh in their faces. They know their *rights* and the police hold no fear for them....they're feral and are left without directon as everyone, police and teachers are too scared of the consequences to try and put them right....

While we allow these people to hold us to ransom with the threat of riot when things don't go their way..it's never going to end....enough of the talking ..and more of the strong armed tactics are needed...before we get another generation of feral children running riot.x

but with ref to my previous post, this has been happening on a small scale for 20 years! The police did nothing then, under our dear departed 'tough' law makers...it wasn't a 'no go area' it was a perfectly ok estate of social and private housing...and all they would do is move a gang of 'kids' away from one area to another....every night!..

This isn't new...only the scale is new. The rot set in a long time ago.

Not a paper I normally read, but noticed the front page of the Sun

Uggers

Uggers Report 10 Aug 2011 13:27

The petition's a bit imbalanced isn't it? Why just take benefits off those on beneifts? Why are they not suggesting taxing those working on a higher level as well? That's because it's easier to tag those involved as scrounging lazy scum. It's also less intelligent to do that.

There are going to be a lot of reasons why people have got involved in this - none of them justifiable in my opinion but after stopping this chaos and punishing those guilty with the law, the country needs to better address the problems that have led to this.

Uggers

Uggers Report 10 Aug 2011 13:28

Rose, you're right about riots - nothing new. Different scale as you say but modern technology means there's a bit more orgnaisation about it.

I see the courts are already handing down harsh sentences ( falls on floor laughing my head off )

19 year old gets 1 day in prison for robbing store of 2 tea shirts, but released because he has been in custody for more than 24 hours

so the fact he only manages to get away with 2 items makes it not a serious offence then

they the authorities are having a laugh

Hello Uggers :-) Hope you're in a 'safe' area.

First person through the courts today for looting is a primary school teaching assistant..... it's a much deeper-rooted problem than alienated youths or race, or poverty ( though they are all relevant to an extent) ... it's a disregard in all strata of society for honesty, ethics, and compassion. (imo).

Can't help but wonder how many 'honest upright citizens' would take a free gift of a new telly if one was left on their doorstep....looks at self in mirror and wonders.... :-0

Merlin Report 10 Aug 2011 13:50

Well I,m back again having a look, I,m glad it is stll on and everyone is having a chance to say what they think without any nastyness.I read in the Paper today that some young women were giving orders as to what they wanted to get.Bit much really, but as people say Its Thuggery and Theft on a very grand scale and should be stopped. The Riot act was recinded some 30yrs ago but there are other means that could be used such as declaring Martial Law in certain places where deemed necessary, and do as they do in other countries call in the Military useing the amount of force needed to quell the rioters. One thing not mentioned by anyone is, We are responsible for paying all the costs of this. The 1886 Riot Damages Act allows Insurance Companies,Individuals and Businesses to reclaim losses from local Police Authorities,Which are funded by the public,(As far as I know its still in force")also most Insurance rates may go up to cover the losses. So brace yourselves to be hit in the pocket yet again.(And the Government will gain by the extra tax on insurance. We lose all round**M**

Rambling

Rambling Report 10 Aug 2011 13:53

They are just talking about insurance on news Merlin...if you don't have an insurance policy you can indeed claim through the relevant police authority if you can provide details that damage was caused due to riot.

Merlin

Merlin Report 10 Aug 2011 14:36

But even Insurance companies can do it Rose, and I bet they wiil, you know how tight they are in paying out claims, they won,t be slow to jump at this chance.**M**.

Rita, The 19 year old who was given 1 day in prison and released because of the time he had been in custody was not the school teaching assistant who has to appear in the Crown Court later

Muffyxx Report 10 Aug 2011 15:49

The vast majority of them aren't being given bail.and are being remanded in custody...woman reporting in court on sky says she's never known a judge be as strict as he's being today.

Good news !

supercrutch

supercrutch Report 10 Aug 2011 15:52

It is to be assumed that those in employment will suffer larger fines (and pay them) via attachment of earnings if necessary or bailiffs calling.

That way the tax payer does recoup a tiny fraction of the costs of reinstating the infrastructure.

Those offenders who are being charged to appear in a higher court will get a stronger sentence than those being fast tracked.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 10 Aug 2011 16:13

They will remand them where possible to keep them off the streets.

Muffyxx

Muffyxx Report 10 Aug 2011 16:19

There are sky news reporters tweeting now from the courts where these cases are being heard.

Mostly from what i've seen so far..the vast majority are teenagers who are grizzling and begging to be given bail as they've got a job interview/exam/meeting blah blah blah.

My heart bleeds............not ! x
