Roy, I know what you mean about parents being strict.
When I was around 8 or 9 I walked along the mile end road in the east end of London to visit my grandparents. On this particular day as I passed the local greengrocer. I SA a palette of plums...my favourite fruit. Now please recall that fruit was not as easily available at the time. So as I walked past I picked up a plum and bit into it then a hand landed on my shoulder...feer does not explain how I felt. A lady said, " I know your father, Bridget and you have just stolen that plum" . I was terriefied. I turned around and she continued " you can take that plum into the owner or tonight I shall have to tell your father that you are thieving". I knew immediately which option I was going to take. I walked up the steps to tne shop, the bottom floor of a house, and apologised to the owner. He was tall compared to me, he looked very angry, but he said if you promise NEVER do this again I will not slow that nurse to tell your father. I gave him the plum, and walked away crying....but what a lesson I learnt..

Shame we do not do the same now.

There was one of those so called experts on TV last night, you know the sort who gets wheeled in front of the camera to comment and give the reasons why these little darlings are looting and robbing and terrorising.....well, apparently it's because they are bored.

Bored???!!!!

How can they be bored? They have more now than any generation ever had - each with their own TV, designer clothes/trainers, video games, mobile phones, blackberrys, etc etc etc, not to mention the ease at which you can have credit these days so go and buy before you can afford it......and they're bored?? Yes, apparently they're doing it as a form of entertainment because they are bored.

Shame on the decent upright hard working tax-paying citizen for not providing them with interesting and exciting things to do 24 hours a day!!!!

Words just fail at times, don't they :-S

BORED BORED, how the hell can being bored be a reason to burn down peoples business's and homes!!! If my sons get bored they find things to do, my 18 year old cut my grass front and back yesterday, my 11 year old reads, draws, writes, helps with chores, plays with the dog. How the hell can being out at heaven knows what time running through streets that you and i would not walk down in darkened hours, acting like feral (?)animals be an acceptable alternative to being BORED!!!!!
I am heartbroken to think of all those people who have struggled working for a living at the Sony distribution centre, who are now jobless through no fault of their own, just because some mindless idiot was BORED!!!!
Rant over with for now, (but I'm sure it will return,!!!!).
Hoping everyone has a safe day. xx

Two youths have been arrested in Scotland. One in Glasgow and one in Dundee for trying to arrange the same thing here via facebook.

I hope they really throw the book at them..Should take them down to where the riots have been and make them clean up.

I'm not particularly bothered whether the spelling on the e-petition is correct or not, try reading some pages from Hansards!!

The only punishment some people understand is when it hits them in their pocket.

A slap on the wrist and a small fine for civil disorder won't deter thugs, it'll be another qualification on their 'street cred CV'.

Hey i know, let's swap each convicted rioter for a british soldier in Afghanistan, let the young soldier return to the warm loving arms of his family and leave the rioter out living on next to nothing , working 14 hours a day for next to no money, and see how long it takes him to get BORED then.

See i did warn you the rant would return!!!

I wonder how many parents and relatives reconise their darling little Johnny from TV images who will just not bother to inform the police?

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 10 Aug 2011 10:40

wonder what the reaction of the parents is when these thugs get home with stolen goods!! softly softly PC approach does not work - turn the water cannons on them - put a coloured dye in the water - then you can identify the little thugs - let's have some boot camps set up and send the little darlings off to some remote area and let them learn some survival skills

The jails wonlt be big enough to house all these little failed abortions so a boot camp under canvas should suit them very nicely

On the TV yesterday - the voices of two 17 yr old girls were heard saying what good fun it was to be involved in the riots, how they were enjoying drinking the stolen booze, had been drinking all night, and thought it was " a great laugh, real good fun innit".
Actually they didn't sound drunk at all, so I think that bit was just bravado, but they continued speaking, saying they were doing it..
"to show the police who was in charge, to show the politicians, the conserva'ives or whoever it is, an' all the rich people with businesses and stuff, they just gotta be shown who is in charge of the streets"......

Feeling pretty ashamed to be a Brit at the moment. I thought things had got bad out here at the beginning of the year, but this is terrible to see happening in a civilised country.

Not a bad idea at all Izzy, ship them out there in return for a soldier, but once they've arrived out there , just forget about them. Let's see how bored they get!

Just commenting on the media images I'm seeing. I haven't yet seen any mature faces...they all look like youngsters to me. Yes, many have got their faces covered, but by shape, size, demeanour, shows if they are a teenager, or more mature adult.
Just MY opinion of course :-)

99% of them are well behaved of course but it's amazing to see what the other percentage can manage to do - as has been said, these are mainly children who should be in bed, not roaming the streets causing mayhem - if they're acting like this at such a young age, what hope is there for the future

supercrutch

supercrutch Report 10 Aug 2011 11:14

It's not a witch hunt of children of school age - it's a determination to punish the kids who are trashing everything who ARE of school age and their parent/s or guardian.

My middle brother was a Ted, the interest was mostly music and although they hung around coffee bars with juke boxes mostly they did just that - hung around. They may well have seemed intimidating in numbers but they were not thugs. Now I do admit there were some gangs in East London who found the pastime of 'paki bashing' a laugh, the deep inside pocket of the drape coat was used to house half a house brick.

I'm not starry eyed about those days, but these Teds were a tiny minority. If they were seen looking menacing locals would make sure they dispersed PDQ.

I was a Mod, friends were Rockers, we had friendly anti-the other banter. The Rockers took the mickey out of our Vespas and we did the same about the grease machines.

Yes the Brighton clash was shameful but those who took part were actually fearful of police reaction and the consequences that may affect their jobs. They had jobs, that's how they managed to dress so well and keep their scooters on the road!!

There's no comparison between the 50s and 60s and 2011.

I wonder why his colour matters, Rita?

There were faces of all colours out there rioting, and businesses belonging to people of all races were looted, let's not make it a race issue when it isn't, please.

I'm getting a bit tired of people making out this is a recent phenomenon...

1990 my mother and I left the formerly nice council estate we lived on because of the gang of youths who made life hell every evening outside our house, drinking, taking drugs, setting petrol on fire for the 'fun' of it, kicking or trying to pull out the fences...and the response was the same then..."we have nothing to do, when you were our age you had coffee shops and youth clubs"....and when I was their age I can remember some of my age group saying much the same!

Please remember the 3 British men from the Asian community who have died...been murdered, hit and run, while defending their homes. The 200 people who stood in vigil waiting for news at the hospital have been praised for their dignity.

he was a black boy - fact - had he been a white boy I'm sure Rita would have said so

obviously the fact that he was black is neither here nor there but why on earth is it offensive to say someone is black but not that they're white!!!

Rambling Report 10 Aug 2011 11:44

It's some ' youth'...colour doesn't come into it...the fact is that a minority of Britains youth is doing this...I have seen youths of all etchnicity.... working together...AND against their own 'race'.

there are a higher proportion of certain races in certain areas... because there are 'normally' ( ie there are more 'whites' living in this town...more 'asians' living in the town up the road).

I put my three penny worth on one of the threads two nights ago, submitted it, and then read, in red print, that the thread no longer existed!

Last comment a good idea. On one website, someone suggested fitting them out in orange garments as well as shackling.

When will our "government" learn? Everyone needs to know boundaries, what is acceptable and what is not.

Think shutting down mobile phones etc would be a disaster for some businesses - one of my sons relies on his to run his taxi business.

It will be interesting to see how these thugs are going to be punished.
