Slight difference in one's diet from burkas - my husband won't eat pork, but only because it makes him ill
I think Anne of Green Gables sums the situation up

my son is a train driver and quite recently on Temple Meads station he saw a ticket collecter refuse to allow a woman through the barrier with a travel card because she was wearing a veil which she would not remove for him to check her ID - a policewoman walked up and pulled the veil off revealing that the woman was in fact not the card holder!! The woman was also racially abusive to the ticket collector.

you have a valid point there ann.we should all be treated the same .that incident would,nt have happened had that person been not allowed to wear the burka.how many a day get through the system i wonder.but if its not allowed its not a prob.

Jupiter Joy:

"in dubai you have to be covered up.they dont like peeps flashing there bits .which is fine ."

Do you really think it's fine?

Would you be happy to live under that rule?

If not -- and I really suspect not -- why are rules like this constantly offered up as justification for some rule that someone wants to apply to other people in your country?

You would not be happy if you were forced to wear the burqa. Face it, if I may play on words.

You would not be happy if you were forced to go topless, either.

There may be valid reasons for requiring that people not cover their faces in public places.

They have absolutely precisely zilch to do with what rules are applied to anyone's clothing in any other place on earth.

So why can't we just stop dragging that smelly red herring across threads like this?

Rambling Report 18 Jul 2010 19:29

Oh well that's ok then ...full justification for banning it...someone tried to cheat on the transport system wearing one :)

I wonder how many times a day that happens with people NOT wearing the burka?

But...when even the Conservatives say it won't happen, because it is "illiberal" i shall not worry too much that the law will change...or that laws of the kind set by countries where freedom ( especially for women) is at a premium will find their way here...or then I fear I WOULD be toddling 'back home' to the lands of (some of) my ancestors :))

if i wanted to go to dubai that much i would follow there rules ,after all they live there, its there way.
as for over here my point is why is it rules apply to whoever and not to everyone.no-one likes unfairness.and im one.
i work with overseas students.2 of my girls wear burkas.i cant count the times ive said hi to the wrong one.how can i tell.
the red herring that you dont like dragging is one that annoys alot of people.and as ive said before each to there own opinion.xx

I think it's true that it would be un british, our history is all about having people from different countries and cultures come here and mingle with us and that all adds to make us what we are now. I don't agree with the when in Rome thing because I wouldn't go to another country and join in with stoning adulterers or having anything to do with young kids working in factories etc. Accepting different beliefs and ways of life is what makes this country so good

I could care less about women wearing a burka if a woman wants to wear one, but if they are forced in any way that is a no no.
I do believe that if requested to show their faces, say in a bank or where recognition is important, then they should.
I personally would want to see the person I was talking to, not just a pair of eyes.

hi george, bearing in mind how high risk we are.and the security aspect ,that should be enough reason to not cover your face.ann pointed out a reason for this.
and again if all of us were to cover our faces then what....would that be ok ,when in a bank or an airport etc.just pointing this in another direction.xx

Hey ho, burkas schmurkas.

Rather than ban this that and the other, just ban all religion. Problem solved. As if that wonderful situation would ever arise!

But seriously, all this talk about terrorism, security and so on is pretty much wide of the mark. People who have stupid beliefs should be allowed to wear stupid clothes. Of course, it's my prerogative to think someone elses 'beliefs' are stupid, same as it's my prerogative to think their clothes are stupid, as they are equally entitled to think my clothes or whatever are stupid. At least no one can say my beliefs are stupid - I dont believe in any supernatural nonsense, so there we go.

I hate bans. Detest them. They don't work and all they do is criminalise otherwise law abiding people for the sins of a tiny few.

i dont agree with what they get up to but dress sense its your choice to visit, i would love to sit in a mud hut and eat a traditional dish on the floor and never come home , no washing up ironing hoovering , but i wonder when the making of babies season starts and there is no bedrooms what happens, cause i couldnt be doing with people watching xx

I very much believe in the "When in Rome do as the Romans do" - I would not visit a country where people are stoned to death so I would not have to abide by their rules. If I am a visitor in another country I will abide by their rules - if their rules are alien to me I will not visit their country - simple as.

I would never go to Turkey for instance - they allow torture of bears for entertainment - not civilised that!!

Let me try again, Jupiter Joy.

What does it matter how things are done in other countries, when you are deciding how to do things in your own?

There is no public health care in the US. Does that mean you shouldn't have it?

There are rules about how women dress in Dubai. Does that mean the UK should have rules about how women dress?

See how that works?
Banning the burqa is **a rule about how women dress**.

If you don't think there should be rules about how YOU dress, where you live -- and I really think you do not want to have rules about how YOU dress -- how come you think it's okay to have rules about how someone else dresses?

I will have to repeat what I repeatedly say: IF there is some good reason for making rules about how people dress, fine and good.

"Because they do it there" is not a good reason.

And the fact that something "annoys a lot of people" is really really really NOT a good reason.

Good lord, just think of all the things I could get banned if it were.

Ann o' GG -- are you really meaning to call citizens of your country "visitors"?

Are they visitors because they were born somewhere else?

Does this apply to everyone born somewhere else?

How about immigrants from, oh, Australia, who are Roman Catholic? The state religion in England is CofE. I think maybe they should be banned from wearing crucifixes in public. When in, er, Rome, do as the Romans?
