Since my younger brother had a replacement hip then another operation when the hip became infected, then was diagnosed with bowel cancer and was was operated on the was operated on again 3 days later when it all went wrong etc etc I feel run down depressed and worn out. Is this normal ?

Hello David nice to meet you. I think if you are very close to your brother it is possible his problems will upset you, making you feel very low. if you feel you would find it helpful to talk to us here or by pm please do

He was in Wansbeck hospital for a month when he expected to be out in a few days. His replacement hip became infected and he was affectedted elsewhere. They had to do the operation again and clean his system. I was visiting him most days and some days communication was absent, he was ill, very ill. Then he was sischarged home and I have seen him almost every day since. He had a scan early in the year and was diagnosed as having bowel cancer.He was oprerated on. 3 days later it all went wrong and they had to operate again. He now has a colostomy bag and its taking some getting used to.He is looking forward to chemotherapy.The whole succession of events has taken a lot out of him and I confess it has been at times stressful and an emotional drain.

David I'm so sorry your brother has suffered so much. It's a big weight on your shoulders too. Does he live alone? I know bowel cancer, I have two uncles who have had it for many years. I know one had a bag at first but later reversed. He is doing very well ( at 75) now. It will have been a huge shock to his system to go through all this. Also as someone you love I know it will have been very hard on you. Have you spoken to your doctor? Anti depressants may help you through all this.

Thank you, I think the doctor must see more in an average day to make him depressed. I''m sure my brother thought he had MRSA. He said cleanliness standards were a lot less than he had expected for a hospital

Sorry not been on a few days, my black hole is becoming a bit to comfortable, so thought I had better crawl out for a while.

David, my dad had bowel and stomach cancer, he was nearly eighty when he passed away, and it was not from cancer. He also had problems after with infection, sometimes I think it is par for the course these days with any operation, unfortunate but true. Your brother will get stronger, it takes time. You are already giving him the love and support he needs. I does take it out of you when they (loved ones) are ill, and what makes it harder for you is you cannot do much to help. Believe me you being there for him is the best thing you can do for him just now. Take care, and make sure you are getting rest as well, that is very important for you.

David stress can knock you six physically and mentally, I would be surprised if you weren't feeling down you have a lot on your shoulders at the moment, don't be afraid to visit the Doc and get some help if won't lift by its self. xx

Ive to attend Doctors on Thursday morning, but you only get 5 minutes. What do I discuss ? my gammy knee ? my ear ? or tell her Im melancholy ? They must hear it a dozen times a day.

David all three what's wrong with that, she is a Doctor and gets paid to help you...
I would seriously think about asking her for some counselling regarding the depression something as long lived as yours needs some special attention, being depressed is nothing to be ashamed of, if you had a broken leg you could see the problem and get it fixed, well depression is a medical problem too it's just harder to see..

David, make a list so you don't forget things when you get into the docs, it's easily done if you feel under pressure. Ask her if you can have a further apptmt to discuss things more if you don't feel there is time, you can book double apptmts if you know you have a lot to sort out, well at our surgery you can, but don't be afraid to open up to the doctor and ask for help.
I know that lots of things happening in a short space of time disturbed my mental health a lot and it's never gone right since due to having to fight for counselling etc so push for your rights, and hopefully counselling will be easier to get where you are.

Hello David and welcome to our thread, I agree with everything that's been said, you do need help. Your depression has been developing for a long time, now your brother is ill and you are worrying over him, it might just make you worse.

Well good news, we are moving on Monday, the van is coming at 9-oclock so I am working as best I can to get stuff packed. It was touch and go whether hubby could get next week off, he heard at 3pm yesterday he could. As soon as he got home we rung the removal firm and luckily they had Monday and Thursday free, so we booked Monday. We are also keeping our phone number, which is a worry off my shoulders so those who have it needn't worry.
Talking about shoulders, I have been having awful pain in both my elbows for quite a while, when doctor came on Tuesday I told her, I have only gone and got tennis elbow in both arms now. How much more can I have before falling to pieces. She said she could give me an injection in them but I have heard it isn't very nice, so I said no not yet.
My oncologist was talking about acturpuncture(sp) last week for the pain, has anyone had it and does it work?
Well I have been working since half seven so I am off to bed for my lie down.

Y/caz, I have had acupuncture, found it really good, I was lucky to get it as part of my rehab. The only problem they had was the needles kept flying out on my right side, the wonky side. They did not just work out and fall over but really popped. I have used it before as well for sciatic pain and that also worked well. And no they are not painful. It is worth a try.

The last time I had sciatica I had trouble walking, you know how painful it is. My first session I walked out pain free, I did go back for a few more sessions then did not have sciatica for 5 years. Unfortunately, there is no one close now to go to, or I would be there like a shot.

Sorry for not being 'around' lately. Have not read the new postings either.Am feeling far too low, the worst I have been for a very long time.
Some of it can be blamed on the meds not being sorted yet, this is a question of trial & error.Turns out that the old thyroid has been far too under-active the last couple of months, instead of over-active, which is also an awful feeling.Hope things pick up soon, so that I can be more cheerful on here.

Thanks for that Gail, I don't know anyone who has had it. I had heard it worked but it's better to hear from someone who's had it. My doctor is trained in it but she said if I have it to go to the place they send me as most cancer patients will be sent there.
I have to have radiotherapy as well on the worst parts, she said it will lessen the pain, trouble is I don't know where the worst pain is. She then said but you also have chronic FM so the pain from that will mask any cancer pain, I hope with every fibre I don't have to go back in that MRI again.

Eileen I am so sorry to read you are down, I feel guilty as I have been so busy and seem to have ignored you, not on purpose love, I can assure you. Hope you are feeling a bit better when they get your thyroid right.

Treehunter are you feeling better now? you were hurting all over last time I saw, and you will feel better when you move, I am willing it for you.

Please don't shoot me down for asking, but I was wondering whether any of you may be suffering from SAD I have had SAD (seasonal effective disorder) to one extent or the other my whole life, I was wondering if any of you may be suffering this also.
I believe it's at it's worse between November and February, have any of you tried the lamps?

Isn't it strange that a lot of us stay off of the boards when we're having a difficult time, just when we actually need the support that the kind people on here offer.

e have one because it was here when we came.
My water bill goes up and down like a yo yo.
it has just gone up by £1 per week for the next year. Does not sound much but to us that is quite a jump.

When I had my operation for BC... which went very well I'm happy to be able to say... My friend sent me a card which said just that.

I have had to try and take one day at a time... anyway, some days are bad and some days are good, and some days are absolutely wonderful. We have so many people here to talk to, take advantage of it, that is why we are all here.

Oh Mary you poor soul, your life sounds like mine was at one time.
It used to be that without the bad luck we had we would have had NO LUCK AT ALL!
We went through a good few years of strife but we came through it.
Just waiting for the next bombshell to fall... ha ha ha
Still, the children had fun and you read a book, and now, best of all, you are home. Bless you and your little family.
If only we had the power we could change everything for each other. Wouldn't that be wonderful?

And Carole you are right I should be a little more thankful for the progress I have made... but I am really.
I am amazed myself. I thought that I would never be able to read and write again and as for the computer.. well look at how much I am typing now. Still takes a while, but not all day as it used to.
My best friend now is the ABC spellcheck... how would I manage without it?
