Susan10146857 Report 13 Feb 2010 21:57

Meets.

Should they be for 'everyone' New and old, or Just for those that know each other?

Should anyone be able to say that others cannot attend, taking in to account that not everyone gets on with everyone else and some may get on with others........Try and keep up and guess what I mean....it's been a hard day.

A proper debate please....tis not a fish wifes conference :-)))))

Edit....Tis S-U-S-A-N...ifern yer don't mind

StrayKitten

StrayKitten Report 13 Feb 2010 22:00

yes they should, even people who have disagreed should be able to attend and see the people they wana meet, and maybe just maybe they would get on with the people thy have "argued" with ont he boards

altho i make the exception, of 3 people who if attended i know no one would talk to lmaooooooooo, xxx

My gt grandmother was a 'fishwife' Susan .. I just add that in passing ;)

Re meets.... I have been to 3, and I think they should be open to everyone...I will happily meet anyone at a meet

and that is all I'd best say :))

Muffyxx Report 13 Feb 2010 22:03

Erm.

I always used to say *everyone welcome* on mine tbh.

BUT after some of the shite that has occured (people who clearly didn't like me trying to assure an invite) I now assume that those who know they won't be welcome will have the sense not to add their names.....so far so good...... In reality from MY point of view.....I'd meet anyone face to face as I'd find it *interesting* in more ways than one *grins* BUT I like the meets I attend to be FUN not bitchy so I'd rather the people who don't like me on the boards stay away from any meet I organise.

TBH why would someone who disliked me on here want to come to a meet I was at anyhow ?

I don't invite anyone...... I wait for people to add their names but I'd welcome 99.999% of people to a meet.......I LOVE meeting new people from here as well as those I've met before and the meets are such a fun aspect to life on the board.

Some people I think use meets to cause *issues*

but that says more about them than the people that are arranging them xx

George Report 13 Feb 2010 22:04

I think they should be for old and new members, otherwise how would anyone get to know anyone else.

I could care less if someone i could not get on with was at a meet, as I would hope there would be plenty of other people there to chat with.
You have to give and take in this life, everybody is different.

AnninGlos Report 13 Feb 2010 22:04

I wonder if the first meets were different because people hadn't known each other for very long and therefore had no preconceived ideas.

I think they should be for all, often (and I am not talking specifics, bearing in mind that there is one currently arranged) the people who have met up before carry on talking about previous ones and appear to all be extra friendly and a ready made group. This may well put off some of the newer members who are a bit shy.

SueMaid Report 13 Feb 2010 22:07

Well SUSAN - I would say that meets should be open to everyone but I would be wary of what I said if there were certain people there. Especially you:-)) Seriously, I don't think I'd stay away if someone I didn't get on with was going. When we visit the UK next I expect an enormous meet to be arranged:-)))

AnninGlos Report 13 Feb 2010 22:07

I wonder if somebody that we didn't get on with, or saw as a trouble maker on the boards, that nobody knew, just turned up and gave a different name, would we get on with them?

TeresaW

TeresaW Report 13 Feb 2010 22:07

But surely the idea of a 'meet' is so that we can MEET each other...after all, when I went to my first meet, there were 30 people I'd never seen before, I 'met' them all face to face for the first time.

Like Muffy, I would welcome the opportunity to meet 99.9% of people from here. There are only one or two I wouldn't like to meet face to face, because certain behaviour has made me feel I don't want to have them coming into my real life. They can stay on the boards LOL.

That said, if those one or two were present at a meet, it wouldn't put me off going either.

Aww SueMaid, if only I'd known, but I'm going away that day.

Rambling Report 13 Feb 2010 22:10

I have been sitting on my hands again ;)

the best I can come up with is that there is only one person that I haven't yet met that I wouldn't want to, and only one person that I have met, that I couldn't bear to :)

I happen to be addicted to meets, lolol, and am quickly becoming the GR Meet Groupie.... I think that meets should be open to anyone, if they are arranged on the boards as a GR *Meet*

However... there is nothing to stop people who have become friendly via GR to meet up, without inviting others... for instance, I invited people from GR to my home last year... there are a lot more people I would have loved to have invited, but I was restricted to the number of folk who would fit into the house if it rained.

That was a private party, with GR friends invited... and arranged outside the boards.

I have to say, there are one or two people who would stop me from attending a meet... I wouldn't care to spend a lot of time and money travelling to a meet that was going to be unenjoyable, so in those circumstances, I would stay away.

StrayKitten

StrayKitten Report 13 Feb 2010 22:15

yeah but like george said if there was enough people attending so ya didnt have to talk to them then it would be ok
i think certain people who know, if they were welcome or not and have the good sence not to go to a meet they wouldnt be welcmed at

altho i would still atend if i knew they were going BUT i duno if i could hold my tongue if i was in the same room as them, infact i KNOW i couldnt lolol xxx

Guinevere Report 13 Feb 2010 22:16

I used to "advertise" the Ladies wot Lunch meets here as well as on other genealogy sites. Now I only advertise them on the site I use most, although FB friends and members of Jeans Army know when they are happening and know they are welcome because I've said so.

There are several reasons for this. The first is I don't log in to GR as often as I used to not am not around to answer questions. Secondly, the ladies meet 5 or 6 times a year and sometimes the meets are small, although there were quite a lot at the last one. Thirdly, most of us are "real world" friends, some aren't members of GR.

But mainly because the last two I mentioned here attracted interest from new people who said they'd like to attend, so we fixed a date to suit everyone I said I'd meet people at the station or bus station and gave out my mobile number - then they didn't turn up. No explanation or apology was ever forthcoming.

So now I don't bother mentioning them on GR.
