Sallie Report 3 Sep 2009 20:43

Marilyn, my problem is with the Hughes family. My grandmother was Mary Hughes and she married a Pryce Hughes. I have found my granfather's side of the family, but my grandmothers side is more difficult. My grandmother was born in Ruabon, Denbighshire, her father was John Hughes and her mother was either Jane or Mary. I have two birth certificates for a Mary Hughes, both with a father John, one with a mother Jane, and the other with a mother Mary. The two families lived in the same street in Ruabon. I have my granparents marriage certificate, they got married in Ruabon. I've searched the censuses, but can't find her with her parents on any of them.
She was living in Hanley, Stoke on Trent on the 1891 census, with an auntie and uncle. She married my grandfather in 1892, and on the 1901 census, they were still living in Hanley, where some of their children were born.

Because she had my father her last child when she was in her forties, she
died before I was born. I haven't got anyone to ask, as all my cousins were a lot older than me, in fact all my cousins children were in the same age group as me and my brother.
I now wish I had asked more questions when the older ones were still alive.

It's all the more difficult, because I don't know the Ruabon area at all.

I don't know if you would be able to help Marilyn--the Welsh records are not the best of records to find. So many names the same, it's very confusing. Thank you!

Love, Sallie.

Purple **^*Sparkly*^** Diamond Report 4 Sep 2009 02:15

Huia, much better for you to go to see Phil every three days or so, then neither of you get too distressed. It would be good if they sorted out his medication so he speaks more clearly and yet isn't confused and upset either. Glad you are looking after yourself and doing things again like the choir. You are most important to look after cos you have so much to deal with, it wouldn't do for you to get poorly. It's good that you have the spring and summer to look forward to don't you which will make things nicer for you when travelling around and help brighten your mood I hope.

Mo hope that rat has gone now, I saw a programme the other day where the chap had to put down this poisonous powder so when the rat ran through a pipe or whatever it was, it brushed on his coat, then he groomed himself and ingested the poison. We had a rat outside in the garden, I had seen it skipping across the lawn to dropped bird bread etc and hadn't told o.h. cos I figured it wasn't hurting anyone and was quite cute, it was fairly small. But then o.h. spotted it and it had grown some, so he got the rat catcher in. Despite putting down a trap, nothing happened and in the end he stopped visiting even tho o.h. could see there were holes being dug under the shed etc. He kept adding bait and poison to the trap, a sort of box affair but every time he looked the food had gone but the poison not touched, even though they were close together and more than that, something was making a nest in there, lots of dried grass appearing which he would throw out and then next day or so, more stuff in there lol After a while the rat disappeared - well no more holes - but the grass and leaves continued to turn up in the trap for some time.

Another time he said there was something digging holes in some of the flower tubs, perfect round smooth holes and he thought something must be living in one big tub cos there were two holes as if a front and back door. I didn't take much notice till one day I noticed the holes and realised what had made them!! We had placed some metal and plastic covered supports for plants in the tubs and when they weren't needed any more he had removed them, not noticing till later the holes that were left where the wind had blown them back and forth creating a large hole at the top surface lol He hadn't put two and two together lol

Marilyn, am looking forward to Corfu, as a friend of mine once wrote on a post card to me from her first foreign holiday, Corfu is Corrr -Phew! She must have been talking abuot the Greek Adonises lol

Jean, hope you get some nice weather for your hols, take your wet weather gear and it might frighten the rain away. I will pack a plastic mac and a brolly just in case!

take care everyone - will catch up with you all again later on

~~~~~ Hi everybody.
I dont know if I have a bit of a cold or if it is just hayfever. My nose is stuffed up a bit and it feels like the beginnings of a cold. This morning I woke at 6am but felt I had had a good sleep but by 9.30 I was tired so lay down on the settee with a blanket over me and slept for almost 3 hours! I must have needed it. I hope I sleep well tonight. I might dash into town in the morning to do a little shopping.
Mo in Kent Report 4 Sep 2009 16:08
Just to let you all know,we killed a rat last night.
When Roly came down this morning,it was laying on the carpet,behind my chair. It had been in the trap,and tried to eat the peanut butter,but the trap snapped closed,and the rat went flying across the floor. I had blood to clear up from the wall and carpet.
All we are hoping now,is that it was on it's own,and we don't come down to another one in the morning.
So much for the rat poison working.
Huai,could you have another sinus infection ? That is another possibilty
for your nose feeling as it does.
I had to chuckle Liz,at your explanation for the holes in your pot. Typical
that we never notice these things straight away. It had to take a woman to notice it. lol
I have been washing all day long,curtains,nets, everywhere I think the rat has been has been washed again.
I will be back later. Bye for now. Mo xxx
Sallie Report 4 Sep 2009 17:18
Hi All,
Mo, well at least you know that one is dead, let's hope there isn't anymore
about. Not a very nice job having to clean up the blood, though.
Liz, good to know that you have booked your holiday in Corfu, hope you will have a lovely holiday. These rats are clever, taking the food and not the poison--it makes me wonder how they can tell the difference.
Huia, you must have needed the extra sleep to have slept that amount of time after a good nights sleep. Hope you will find Phil well when you visit him next. Look after yourself and hope that your cold or sinus trouble will soon clear up.
Marilyn, I've sent you a PM.
Jean, hope all is well with you and your family today.
Hope everyone else is alright.
Speak soon.
Love, Sallie.xx
Huia
Huia Report 4 Sep 2009 20:21
We used to put poison in the ceiling and basement for 'our' rats before we got our latest cat. It was always eaten with relish. I understand that the rats would go outside to die as they were looking for water. Last year we were putting some brodiafacoum (sp) poison into some bait stations in the bush near in our local parks. Initially the bags of poison needed replacing frequently but as time went by they were untouched, so must have done the job. They were also to kill those pesky Aussie 'possums.
Yes, I had wondered if my 'cold' might just be a repeat of the sinus problem. I am shoving the antibiotic ointment up my nose as far as I can.
I ran out of my eyedrops for glaucoma control last night so will have to race into town this morning to get more, if the chemist is open on a Sat morning, otherwise I wont be able to get more until Mon. The stupid eyedrops come in an opaque bottle and it is impossible to see how much is in it. The drops usually last only 18-20 days, even though it says discard 30 days after opening. I must remember to get a renewal every fortnight, that way I wont run out again.
Huia.
Sallie
Sallie Report 4 Sep 2009 20:52
Huia, hope you managed to get your eyedrops, so that you haven't got to go without them until Monday.
I've just been telling my friend about the rat problems that Mo has just had and the one that you had years ago. Although it isn't funny, we had to laugh when I was relating what both of you had told us all. No offence meant!
Speak soon!
No offence taken Sallie.
If I could not laugh about it,I would have cried.
No visitors last night,thank the lord. Pray for me,that it was only the one girls.
I am going to bingo tonight,with my daughter. I can't remember the last time I went. But it will be nice being out with my daughter,on our own,as
Roly can't stand bingo. Wish me luck,I certainly need it,after all the bad
luck I have had recently,with my furry fiend. And I do mean fiend.
Hope you are all well.
And that you got your eye drops o.k Huia.
Love to you all. Moxxx For Jean xxxxxxxxxx{{{{{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}}}}}}
I'll be thinking about you both, fingers crossed. Anyway, enjoy yourselves.
Might look in later.
Morning all.
I had a little win at bingo last night,£20.00. Mind you the tickets were £10.50,so we shared the money and wasn't down to much on our outlay.
I can't believe how few people were there,it used to be so packed. And the prize monies,had dropped to reflect this.
Still it was a night out,and we enjoyed ourselves.
I am going up to the club dinner time,for a game of darts. Have not played since the season finished,earlier this year.
Not such a nice day today,it's dry but overcast.
It's been a little quiet on here for a couple of days,I hope everyone is o.k.
I worry when you are all so silent. It's a good job Sallie has been popping
in,or I would seriously think,I had bad B.O.
Love to you all,hope to hear from you soon. Mo xxx
Marilyn,I did watch the darts,and am doing so now.
I never got to go up for my game of darts. My Daughter rang and asked if I wanted to go to the afternoon session,at bingo again.
We had a bit of luck again,we came away with,£36.50 each. Lovely.
Marilyn,are you any good at tracing people from Belgium. If so could I beg for help please. The only problem is,I don't know when my grandfather came to this country. only that he came from Antwerp. No idea who his parents were either,so it's a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack.
Hows the scrapping going Sallie?
