I showed this thread to my husband last night.... his comment was

*I joined the Army because I was young, and had high ideals, and wanted to protect my countrymen and women from foreign threats... not to become a glorified probation officer/schoolteacher, if that is what I would have had to have done, I think I might have left a lot sooner.

Why use highly trained and professional men and women from the Armed Forces to do something that taxpayers have paid huge amounts of money already to train other professionals for? The laws are already in place to deal with thugs and criminals and terrorists... but they are eroded by our Brussels and our own Judicial system, and the hands of those who could effect change and rehabilitation are tied.

Now THERE is a breed that I would like to have in bootcamp... Lawyers, judges and solicitors*

Please note that I have edited some of this cos I didn't want a ban ;¬)).. and hubby will ask some of the squaddies he works with today how they feel about NS, too. Should be interesting!!

OH and I agree with Len86.

Went to Tangmere Aircraft Museum last year, and the number of photos of young men that were in WW11. some who gave their lives for this country, only in their late teens and twenties.

I said to one of the old RAF men who were in charge,Good job it is not today, or some of the boys would have had to have their mother's holding their hands.

Know lots of young men in their late teens early twenties, who can not find their way anywhere, and Mum has to take them. So how would they get on finding their way to Forces camps.

My OH was in the army for 22 years (me as an army wife for 20). He joined up because he wanted to do the job and loved every minute of it. I asked him what he thought of National Service being brought back.............. his answer was unprintable......... Lol.

My comment about OH not wanting to leave home was because we were saving up to get married.
He had just started to earn 'big money' lol well £15 and getting knocked down to 27 shillings was hard to take! although his pay when he went overseas did rise to £3. Of course that's another argument against N.Service,in that people pay mortgages at a younger age now (though not of course the yobs!)

I still don't think it's a good idea using highly trained men & women to educate disruptive youth ,as in fact their role would be to actually tame them first not teach them!!

Having joined as a nurse because I didnt want to be left behind when all the young men were gong off to do their service, and seeing the effect that it had on good and bad, I am not sure that todays youth are up to it, but it made them independent. Something like a National Service for both sexes to do relief work in deprived countries would maybe make them realise how lucky we are in this country not to have a dictatorship running things, and a fairly safe climate without major national disasters. We still have apolice service that does not think it has the right to shoot first if they dont like the look of you. Jean

OK, I Surrender !!!!. But if you are all against NS for whatever reasons, and you don't want the 'lawless breed' to be punished, and you still want these kids roaming the streets, scaring the hell out of everyone,
What do you suggest - Edlrick no doubt could soon bring them to 'heel' with his methods, but most would be against that.
Put yourselves in 'power' and come up with the 'right' way to put things right, that would be acceptable to all.
But (whisper) - I still go along with a type of National service.... hugs, kisses, pats on the back - love you all.......... John

Sorry Mau, just that I joined the Navy many years ago, after a couple of years, came home on leave to visit one of my civvy mates. When I got there, all the family were crying and moaning, even my mate.. Thinking that something bad had happened, I asked --- The reason was, my mate had just received his National Service orders... Somehow I never felt the same after that.... John

My OH enjoyed the army John and he saw the world( in the Fifties ...no-one took foreign holidays as they do now.
His father was a regular 25 year man,serving from 1920s to 1940s in Burma and India.

Borstal? receive discipline and given work to do (helping others) and hopefully realising their self worth!
