My son, 13, is actually talking about going into the RAF. As he'd be doing it voluntarily I am more than happy for him to go down that route. If he was going to be forced to do it, and be taken away from a productive life outside the forces for 2 years or so, then I would be very much against it.
And as has been said, the Military don't want people there who don't want to give 100% to the job. For one thing it makes it far more dangerous for the other personnel around them.

I haven't read the whole thread so don't know if anyone has raised this but if it was ever reintroduced it would have to be for young women as well as young men surely? What about those that are parents?

SallyF Report 19 May 2008 17:21

You'd have to wonder if any girls would get pregnant specifically not to go in .

Exactly, Sally.

Good point and what age?

So many go to university and don't finish their education until their early twenties.

Blither. Mind, I wouldn't do it anyway even if I wasn't too old. I'd rather go to prison.

The way I look at it is this..............Bring back National Service, or bring back the Cane and Birch.

Uggers

Uggers Report 19 May 2008 17:49

18 and 40??? Have they no idea what that would do to the economy???

See, I knew you were being cheeky. Of course I'm eligible and will be in just after you;)

lol.... John... you don't know if I ever was in the services myself!! ;¬)) I would have quite suited khaki, I think!! My dad wouldn't sign for me to join... my boyfriend joined though, and the Corps I wanted to go into!! So I did 34 years by proxy!!

There are a growing number of young servicewomen who have children, and who choose to go into theatre, so having babies might not get you out of it.

So there is another expense, lol... creches.

And I don't know about civilian Danes and Swedes... but as far as the military conscripts in 1974.... they legged it and most of them took off their uniforms, and got out of the country as tourists fleeing the area... so they were about as much use in a set-to as an icicle in hades! lol!!

Has Pablo left the boards again, do you think??

Love

Todays military services are 100% volunteers, professional and dont deserved to be lumbered with the dregs that society cant or wont be bothered to control

Mauatthecoast Report 19 May 2008 20:58

There used to be schools that were run like that Mac
They were named Borstal!

My OH served 2 years National Service in 1959-61
as did most of his friends, who incidently had just finished 6 year apprenticeships.
They had just started getting full pay too,and went into army/services and most certainly had to take a drastic cut in wages!

They all complained at the time because they had to leave home, were all good lads and never in any trouble.
Most of them served abroad.my OH spent 19 months in Hong Kong, realising afterwards that it had been worthwhile, seeing some of the world.

Afraid that world is so different now though, many of the disruptive youngsters would not take discipline and do not respect authority at school, never mind the Military.
So don't think N.Service is the answer!

John Report 20 May 2008 07:02

Just one little last thing Mau - your lines -
"Because they didn't want to leave home!".....Tut..
"Disruptive youngsters would not take discipline and do not respect authority at school".........
Exactly why NS should be brought back .. John

SallyF

SallyF Report 20 May 2008 08:26

Sorry John have to disagree with you over the discipline thing. The kids who don't respect teachers and are disruptive in class would show no more respect to military personnel. After all they know their rights and know that all anyone can do is shout at them. It's just a pity their parents never taught them that rights come with responsibilities, and for the vast majority of kids like that it's too late to try and change them once they've escaped the education system. Which is how they see it. They don't want to be there and want to escape.
