Dionne,
What's the betting he managed to serve in several areas, ending UP in Pretoria!
Still at least something to go on, did he give you a regiment or anything? Or do you already have that?

Hi again peeps. It is really good news isnt it.
Diane I only have the information as posted in the copy of the email. But I did email back and ask the question re the regiment.I have also asked if the medals Edwin received could be explained to me. So fingers crossed I get a speedy reply.
I have posted a message on Ancestry24 a South African site and I have also emailed a lady in South Africa who has a great interest in researching british military who served in South Africa.
I have 'googled' Edwin/Nursing/Pretoria but nothing really has come up.
If anyone has any ideas as to what I can do now then please shout.

I've tried Googling too, and looking at what National Archives have on nursing records, but nothing relevant. Trouble is, we don't know whether he stayed in SA or came back.
Also, if they have some records on him, which it sounds as though they do, was there any mention of wife etc???? Can you ask them to send a copy of what they have?

Wow.. Dionne, how fantastic to have a little bit more information to go on. Am waiting with 'everything' crossed.. Kind regards, Jennifer P.s.. the medals (didn't realize you had some) will have bars on them, these tell you where he was at certain times when cross referenced with events in SA...

Hi All
Jennifer.. When I was speaking to the man at the Army museum,he asked me to send him Edwins records as he would be able to find out where Edwin was from the list of medals.SO I sent a copy of Edwins whole service record to him and he came back with Edwin searved in Pretoria. Selena..Thanks for the site address I will check it out later.
I had a reply back from a lady on the ansestry site in South Africa. She sent me details on an Edward Livermore.I dont think it is him because of his middle name. The lady said that people often changed their names as Edwin did to Edward. But the middle name listed just seems to unusual. What do you think? Also on Dorotheas marriage certificate dated 1930 she had her father down as deceased.
I am also waiting on a rely from the Army Museum with answers to a few of my questions. Dionne

Hi All
This is another email that I have not long received. This lady is very experienced in her field. She seems to have found the same information as in my previous post. Im getting quite confused now, lol.I really dont know if this is our Edwin.
Dionne x Dear Dionne
I've done a quick check through some of my resources and the only E. with the surname LIVERMORE is the following...
E.G. LIVERMORE in Pretoria in 1909, possibly involved in veterinary work.
Edward Guido LIVERMORE died in the Transvaal (province in which Pretoria was) in 1949, was married to Violet (maiden name (BOURKE). She died in the Transvaal in 1926.
If this is the correct person, the estate files would be useful as the starting point.
The estate files contain a death notice which is completed soon after death, usually but not always, by next-of-kin. It is a legal document used to inform the relevant authorities of the death and becomes the founding document in the estate file. The files would have to be accessed in person. On the death notice form you will find (the extent and accuracy of the information is dependant on who the informant was): - date and place of birth of the deceased - sometimes lists the deceased parents' names - name of spouse(s) and children (including married names of daughters) of the deceased - date and place of death of the deceased - place of residence of the deceased at time of death - whether the deceased left property (moveable and immovable)

Dionne,
How frustrating!! One step forward.. and ?!
I personally don't think this is your Edwin/Edward. There is no mention of him nursing, I accept he COULD have switched to Vet nursing, but that's a bit of a leap of faith, and where would he suddenly pluck Guido from ?!
Perhaps you could ask if Guido was a common SA name?
I think its more likely, that although he was in Pretoria when he was discharged, that actually he was somewhere else for the bulk of the time.
Another question to ask (thinking aloud) may be how common it was for soldiers to stay on in SA after discharge in those days.
Hope you get another breakthrough soon...

Ooops, sorry Dionne, I misunderstood... Don't know what to make of the new information, like Diane I don't think this is your man but in saying that I'm no expert so ignore my comments... Will continue to 'watch' your thread. Edwin can't 'hide' much longer he's got too many people on his trail now..LOL Kind regards, Jennifer
P.S.. Isn't Guido an Italian/Spanish name...

I don't think he's your man either. Why would that middle name just suddenly appear? It's such a distinctive name that it seems unlikely he would call himself that. Also seems unlikely that he would have been in SA for so long when his daughter was over here - how did she get here and who did she come here with??(I know you don't know the answer to that yet, but just thinking aloud)

Hi everyone
I hope that you are all enjoying your weekend. I have an update for you all.
Although there are no further updates on the Livermore side of my fathers family tree, I have great news regarding the Sloper side of things. As you might remember I have been having contact with my cousin Pamela. She is the daughter of Jean Ann. Jean Ann is my fathers sister and she was taken by her father to live in Wales. Today I received some wonderful photographs. A photo of Jean Ann when she was very young. If you were to put a photo of my father in his younger days next to hers you would think they were twins. There was another photograph of her taken only a few years before she died and to be quite honest it was frightening. She was the splitting image of her mother Dorothea Maud Livermore. So alike it was uncanny. But the best of all was that I received to photographs of my grandfather. My fathers dad. There is no denying that my father wasn’t his son. You can even see my brother in his eyes. I took the photographs round to my fathers today. It was wonderful for him being able to see his family. He got very emotional when for the first time in 66 years he finally got to see pictures of his father I took my dad into town today and we bought two picture frames for the photographs of his father. They are now hung on the wall pride of place in my dads home. I am now in the process of obtaining photographs for Pamela as she has never seen pictures of our grandmother (Dorothea). I am also sending her pictures of my father in his younger days. If any of you are interested in seeing any of the photographs then please email me your address and I will be more then happy to send you copies to see.

Hi Dionne,
FANTASTIC news!
I hope you've got good photos, don't be afraid of taking them to a good photographic shop to get them "upgraded" if they are looking a bit tired, and do keep digital copies!
Your father must be utterly amazed at what you have managed to find.
On the subject of the 70yo friend I was helping to find her grandfather's birth mother - who we found worked in a grocer's shop in Putney, where he had been taken as a small child, no doubt to visit her without knowing it was his real mother.... we have found her grave.
Its complicated as her employer purchased the grave for her and another long-serving employee, and we are now trying to trace his estate to see if we can find who legally holds the deeds to the grave so that the remaining family can put a memorial on the grave (there are 17 living cousins from that grandfather). Yesterday we got the death certificate of the employer, and now we are applying for his will.
This lady who had to give up her son for adoption back in 1886, never married (or had any further children to our knowledge), she would never have dreamt that so many years after her death in 1935, people would be searching to find her grave and remember her. I think its so touching, and its so special for your father to be able to see a picture of his father, we haven't managed to trace photos yet, but are still on the case.
To everyone who has a "gap" in their past, don't give up the search, there are amazing people here and elsewhere to help you, and so much information coming online all the time.
Best wishes. Diane

Great news! I would love to see a photo of him - I feel I've really got to know your family! Think you have my email address, if not, send me a pm and I'll send it to you. Your Dad must have been absolutely thrilled, to say the least.

Hi Dionne. Had a look in Colchester library today & found a street directory for Clacton 1955. There is a Mrs M B W Livermore at 37 Southcliff Park Clacton. That is the only entry for Livermore. Also 2 pics of the orphanage. Will send them on. What are the names of the people that lived in Clacton area ? Might be able to find them in the directory.
Malcolm.

Hi Dionne
Thanks for the update, it was good to hear your good news.
It is all very emotional, on a similar note, on Friday I posted a letter to the cousin of my father's half brother (my father is aged 71) - so fingers crossed the cousin will be in touch with me and I can get my dad in touch with his half brother. Then hopefully the half brother in turn will be able to let my dad have photo's of his father.
Hope we get another update from you soon.
Take care
Nicki x
