Cherilyn, I really do think it might be worth contacting the college. They may have records for that period or know where they are.

Potty

Potty Report 8 Jul 2011 14:25

Oh, Mel - I didn't notice that! I did look through most of the images for Shebbear in the 1861 and there were quite a few cow boys and one woman's occupation, given by her son-in-law, was "a poor woman".

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 8 Jul 2011 14:25

Interesting - just found out that both St George the Martyr, Southwark (where I have that both Chas & Wm married) and St Luke Old Street Finsbury (where I have that Wm and his sister were christened) were Anglican churches....

hmmmmmm

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 8 Jul 2011 14:29

That is really interesting about Hannah and the Clarks. I wonder if she had some mild form of disability that made her somewhat dependent? (Just remembered - there was a section for 'disability' in the censuses wasn't there? so maybe not)

Lol about the 'poor woman'!

Some of them still talk the old Devon language me maid!

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 8 Jul 2011 14:35

Just curious - what did George Clark do for a living???

Given where the rest of the family are, a possible for William C in 1871:

1861 England Census
Name: William C Kelly
Age: 18
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1843
Relation: Apprentice
Gender: Male
Where born: Plymouth
Civil parish: Leicester St Margaret
Town: Leicester
County/Island: Leicestershire
Country: England
Occupation: Grocer (App)

Registration district: Leicester
Sub-registration district: East Leicester
ED, institution, or vessel: 24
Neighbors: View others on page
Household schedule number: 42
Piece: 2286
Folio: 41
Page Number: 11
Household Members: Name Age
Alfred Wagstaff 28
Ann Wagstaff 24
Alfred O Wagstaff 3 MO
William C Kelly 18
Charles C Lewis 16
Elizabeth B Bettony 61
Ann M Hodgkin 24
Fanny Allen 13

Cherilyn, before 1837 marriages could only take place in an Anglican church, so that might explain the marriages.

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 8 Jul 2011 14:46

Hmm but says born Plymouth???

I just had a look and it seems the Methodist/Wesleyan movement emerged out of Anglicism, so makes sense after all!

Now another qu - having trouble finding a birth or death for Matilda's hubby Wm Hy Hanson - here's a birth of a son Chris posted earlier:

Name: William Charles Hanson
Record Type: Baptism
Estimated Birth Date: abt 1837
Baptism Date: 14 Jun 1837
Father's name: William Henry Hanson
Mother's name: Hannah Matilda Hanson
Parish or Poor Law Union: Hackney St John
Borough: Hackney

(address, Hackney Road, fathers occ. Master Mariner)

She couldn't find them in 1841. Maybe they went overseas given his occupation???

George Clark was a wheelwright.

I wondered too if perhaps Hannah was disabled but she has an occupation on all the censuses, always something to do with needlework. Possible she was has what is know called "learning disabilities" and was not capable of living on her own?

Mel Fairy Godmother

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 8 Jul 2011 14:53

George Clarke was a Wheelwright.

Mel Fairy Godmother

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 8 Jul 2011 14:54

With her being an adopted daughter as she was a single lady I think both parents were dead by then. I think William died in 1888 and Elizabeth 1890.

I find this Taunton connection very interesting, because that is where Clara Bragg's family were from (John E's wife).

I don't know distances - are these places far apart? ie Cambridge, Gloucester, Somerset, Devon?

Anyways, now 11.15pm here and getting weary - plus getting evil eye from hubby! ;-)

Goodnight!
