Cherilyn Report 6 Jul 2011 13:40

My ggg-grandfather William KELLY's1840 marriage certificate to my ggg-grandmother revealed that he was a widower.

Is there any way at all to find out who this first wife was? I realisei it is a fairly common name so I may never solve this one.

I know he was born c1807 in London, Middlesex from age on later censuses. His father was Charles KELLY, who was a stockbroker according to the marriage cert.

The 1840 marriage took place in Chisshill, Royston & Buntingford. At the time he was living in Peterborough (Cambridgeshire) and his new wife in Little Chisshill.

William himself was a dissenting minister (Methodist). He was married by John Dorrington. John Dorrington jnr and Rebekah Dorrington were witnesses along with Mary Kraushaar (sister of the bride, Elizabeth).

I have researched the Kraushaar side and found the chn of Wm & Elizabeth but can't help wondering if he had another family.

Can anyone help with this mystery please?

PS They moved to Devon soon after they married...

Is this William in 1841? If so Matilda must be from his first marriage:

1841 England Census
about William Hally
Name: William Hally

Occupation is very difficult to read, but I think it says "Independant"; in 1851 he is a schoolmaster.

All born out of county

Potty

Yes that's them in 1851.

I guess even if he had been married c1830, any children would still be with him in 1841...

Is there any trace of his father Charles in 1841? Or is that impossible without his birthyear and birthplace? Not sure if he stayed in London area.

I guess I may never know who his first wife was or what happened to her.

:(

Oh hang on the 1841 is new...hadn't seen that...interesting

And the baptism also new! Well done!!!

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 6 Jul 2011 14:07

His son John Ebenezer (my gg-grandfather) was referred to as an independent minister in 1881 I think, so the 1841 looks good

He was headmaster at Shebbear College in Devon in the 1840s so that fits.

How exciting, you guys are brilliant!!! Thankyou!!!! <3

I wonder what became of Matilda then? Mary could be Elizabeth's as they married in jan 1840

Looking for a baptims for Matilda, this is the only one with a father William:

Father: WM. KELLY Family

FMP have the 1841 as this Cherilyn

KELLY, William M 34 1807
KELLY, Elizabeth F 31 1810
KELLY, Matilda E F 7 1834
KELLY, Mary F 0 (3 months) 1841
ELEMOS, Mary F 17 1824 Devon

Registration District:
Newton Abbot Sub District:
Teignmouth Enumeration District:
Ecclesiastical Parish:

Civil Parish:
East Teignmouth Municipal Borough:
Address:

I would say that it IS Independent Minister on the image and it looks as though Potty may well have the baptism for Matilda as again it DOES look more like an E for second initial than C on image for Matilda.

Back this morning and I see you have been busy! Thank you again.

So Mary must have died between 1841 and 1851. But if Matilda married in 1860, where is she in the 1851 census?

At 17 I suppose she could have been a servant somewhere, or similar.

And so the first Elizabeth has died between 1833 and 1840.

All very exciting progress! Not sure how I can confirm without certs being available...I guess Matilda's marriage would help confirm her father as Rev Wm.

No idea when Wm & Elizabeth died, too many Kellys and no idea if they left Devon.

Got to go to work now, but will be back later today :-)

Thanx again Potty, Helen, Joan and Fanny.

Well done Chris, so it looks as if we have the right baptism for Matilda. There is another Kelly child baptised at the same church. He doesn't appear on the 1841, so possibly died:

Oh good work, Potty! I had found that birth this afternoon and it had me concerned we had the wrong family.

Though Matilda does look like a good match - especially with her being a 'Bible woman' - whatever that is!

I was quite surprised to see Chas' occupation as stockbroker - surely that didn't that have the same meaning in the early 1800s as it does today?!

Chris - that piece about Wm certainly puts him in Old Gravel Lane at the time of Matilda & Wm Hy's births there. Though he did not stay there until 1858...

Mel - that's fantastic! They had some sort of celebration a couple of years ago and invited my mother as a descendant but of course she could not afford the airfare. The web site does not have as much history as it used to :( so I'd love to know more. There was someone at the College office who sent me a copy of a page from an old book that mentioned Wm in his time as headmaster there, which was lovely, and a photo of a plaque.

Cherilyn Report 7 Jul 2011 12:44

By the by, looking at the christening for Wm KELLY in 1806 to Chas & Hannah, I found another at St Luke Old Street, Finsbury to same parents -
Hannah Matilda KELLY! b. 26 April 1810, chr. 20 May 1810.

But can't find her after that. Anyone??? Please ;-)

I need to go to the library on Saturday so might take advantage of the free Anc access they have...not sure how much more it will tell me tho!
