Tracey

I passed on the information on Alfred & Mary's children etc. to my contact in Australia.

Heard back today and thought you might like to see what she said:-

"Excellent information from both you and your helper, it is really great.
Yes there is the Olley family and most of the White family in Lismore will more or less be related one way or another

I can see I have some work to do this end now and I can tell you that I appreciate all your help."

Jeanie:-))))

Wayne,
Been looking for years to trace my ggGrandmother (Agnes Stewart b. Edinburgh 1821, Christened Athelstaneford 1822) during her life, I have her birth, baptism, death and her child births but not her census return for 1841 and 51.
She never married as far as I know and was from a good family, her father was the schoolmaster at Drem in East Lothian, Scotland. She did have three children, all born at her parents house in Drem the first John in 1849 registers him as a Stewart but gives his father as William Whitton. The next two James 1852 and Janet 29/07/1855 give no father. Did not find any reference to the births in the local church minutes which were very good at letting the public know about children born out of wedlock.
The son of Agnes, John though registered as a Stewart at birth married as a Whitton 28/06/1872 to Margaret Hendry in Edinburgh and their first son was register as James Whitton in Edinburgh in 1873 though never used the Whitton name only Stewart. Then for some reason John decided to have his name changed legally back to Stewart and the application for name change was made in Edinburgh on Oct 19th, 1874 and on 27th Aug, 1875 the Whitton name was dropped.
A lot of info I know but to have any chance of tracing this William Whitton I need to know where Anges was on either the 1841 or 1851 census. A mystery I have not been able to solve in twenty years of trying.
Suspect England or Ireland for the census but not even sure on that and why come home every time for births. Her death certificate also makes no mention of a partner when she died young on 16/04/1859 at Ormiston, East Lothian. The name change by John Stewart/Whitton was in effect before his siblings married and had children so no clues there either.
If you fancy banging your head against a brick wall for a while and see what comes out your help would be most welcome.
regards,
Alan.
