Yes they do share common Grandparents (Mary Head and Thomas Hardy Snr). There are extensive trees for Thomas Hardy's family but Mary Ann's father, John, moved from Puddleton to Fordingham and fell on hard times. He is described as the Black Sheep in books. His family is less well documented than the Hardy's of Puddleton. |

Hi Wayne, I am certainly stuck trying to find a Joseph Smith, whon I beleive to have come from the suffolk area.During the first world war, he served as a motorcycle outrider in the military, stationed in Abbotsbury Dorset, he bigamously married Mary May Bridle in 1919 at St Nicholas Church in Abbotsbury, they had a daughter together,Gwendoline Harriet May Smith/Bridle in 1920,born in Abbotsbury.he was found out to have been married before ,with a wife and I believe four children living in the Sufolk area, when he was arrested for stealing petrol from the military and selling it to a Mr Brodby from Abbbotsbury.he was put on trial in Dorchester and served a sentence in Dorchester Prison for theft and bigamony. unfortunately a lot of prison records including his were destroyed in a fire.We have serched most avenues we can think of to no avail,so any help would be appreciated.Joseph Smith was my Grandad.woo I never knew .Regards Colin. |

Yes it was quite a surprise. This is why I so keen to identify the marriage. I can then pass on the connection to the Thomas Hardy Society as a new family line from Mary Ann down to us. That would be a coup. |
