William White's History, Gazetteer, and Directory of Norfolk 1845
BILNEY (WEST) is a small scattered village, with several neat houses, pleasantly situated on and near the Swaffham turnpike, 7½ miles E.S.E. of Lynn; comprising in its parish 298 inhabitants, and about 2,400 acres of land, including 150 acres of plantations, all belonging to John Dalton, Esq., the lord of the manor, and patron of the Church, which is dedicated to St. Cecilia, and is a curacy, certified at £20 per annum, paid by the lord of the manor, but augmented from 1762 to 1817, with £800 of Queen Anne's bounty, of which £429 14s. remain at interest, and the rest was laid out in 13½ acres of land. It was valued in 1831 at £60, and the Rev. Samuel Spencer is the incumbent.
Bilney Lodge, a handsome mansion embowered in vigorous plantations, is occupied by T.M. Wythe, jun., Esq. The National School for Bilney and Pentney, was built in 1833, by subscription

Hi Michelle,
John Turner born 1881 either Yorkshire or Manchester, parents George Turner and Harriet Barry.
John had a wife died in child birth about 1907 her name was Anne. The child lived her name Catherine. John left her with family to be raised. He migrated to Australia just afterwards.
George Turner was a bricklayer and John a butcher in England.
Now you would think with all this imformation I would be able to find John and his family BUT NO!!!!!!!!
It's been fustrating.
Anything ANYTHING if you can just find something.

2) How have you both parents names?Was this from a marriage when he left the country?

3) What is the spelling of Harriet on the cert-if you have 1?Reason i ask is i am looking for George and Harriets marriage and Ancestry and Free BMD both have no matches with surname Barry and Turner?Do you have the marriage?

Sorry that's the way the census records go...i wish i could give you the mother on the census but thats what i found and it was Daniel and father.Looks like it is them cos the occupations match.

I will try and find who the mother was but noticed not much on IGI earlier when i looked.Also their may not have been many siblings??

You did a look up for me yesterday for Catherine Turner, my grand father John Turner and have asked me for more info.
All I know is they lived in either Yorkshire or Manchester. It is fustrating as Catherine could be spelt with a K? His wife in England who died in childbirth was Anne/Ann.
I got the Harriet spelling from his marriage certificate here in Australia when he married my grandmother after he migrated.
On that certificate it had her surname as Barry. Harriet Barry and George Turner.
I wish I had more to go on but thats it.

Not sure if this is suitable for what you do but here goes - I've been searching for information on my late grandfather Edward Gustave Kershaw, born in Lahore India on the 14th December 1888. His parents apparently left Britain? and headed for India as tea planters. according to family members, my grandfather's people holidayed between Scottland and the north of England every year, travelling from India. My grandfather's parents names apparently were Edward Kershaw & Elizabeth Dack. My grandfather had a brother named Norman we've been told but he was killed in a war. When My grandfather & his brother were 12 & 14 years of age, their father brought them both to Colchester - some say Chichester to be confirmed and from there he placed them both into the navy - my father told me the square rigg sailing ships! Both brothers were educated by the ship's captain. My grandfather had a coconut plantation in New Caledonia but somehow got into trouble with the natives there and then went to New Zealand where he was wanted for sly grogging, he must of came to Australia when he was around 19 or 20 I'm guessing. He later joined the Australian army (AIF), leaving no clue as to his next of kin. He was shot and wounded in France whereupon he was transported to England hospital to recover. Whilst over there he heard of his mother's passing and collected around 3000 pounds from her estate, so the story goes! He later returned to Australia marrying and starting a family.
He was very high up in the Free Masons as I found out after inquiring and they told me he was an orphan! But it was his wife who was the orphan. and we know all the history associated with her - so I'm wondering about that! It's a very good story he concocted for one that was an orphan!
Edward Gustave Kershaw died in 1966, he had 6 grown children and a wife who knew only what I have told you in this email - and chose never to tell his family the whole story regarding his childhood, even though he had a car accident and was in hospital on his death bed and still couldn't bring himself to tell what was needed to be told.
I've been a member of GR for a number of years now and there hasn't been one clue as to his existance, I don't know where to turn with this one!

Hi Michelle,

The family with Henry and Ann looks the most correct and fits well with William Henry.

The info I have (from my grandmother, William's granddaughter) is that William's father was called William also. But it could have been Henry William as it was common to be known by a middle name. And that could be the same with the sisters, she does mention 3 maybe 4, one or 2 could have been married and not living there by then. I have photos of all the sisters, very richly dressed and in quite a grand room.

He only had 1 brother, George.

The other thing is that they lived on cnr Prince's and Old Steyne. William returned to England, photographed the house and wrote on it that he had lived there as a boy, but perhaps they'd moved by the time he was 15 in 1851.

There is also a photo of a Doctor Pocock, William Henry's uncle but doesn't give a first name. Maybe he is one of those other families.

So I'll still go with this family.
