Jane it probably is the same bird as I think robins are very territorial.

We have a hedge around the back garden and since it has been very cold underneath the hedge has been a hive of activity with small birds moving fallen leaves, it looks as though they are getting plenty of insects and worms to eat, but as soon as I go out with food they stop foraging and take the easy option :-D :-D

Out in the garden this morning,clearing snow.

As soon as I'd scattered seeds,raisins and nuts etc. the birds darted out from underneath the bushes and it got me wondering how on earth they keep warm perched in the trees overnight?
Well tonight on Winterwatch was the answer.... There was unique footage of tiny long-tailed jays/tits jostling for position on a branch and snuggling close together to give each other body heat.

Chris,Michaela and Martin were thrilled as,even they'd never ever seen this happen before. It was magic! anyone else watch the programme? :-D

I have a job to keep the birds in food, they are eating us out of house and home :-D
Thrushes , Blackbirds, Robins, Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Green Finch's, Jay's , and several tit varieties including a dozen or more of the long-tailed tits.

Mau yes I saw that, I was telling my OH about it this morning. I had not realised that long tailed tits were so small, even though we get them in the garden. Apparently they weigh the same as a pound coin. The way the latest one to join the group jumped into the middle of the group to keep warm was great. Lovely to see I wonder if they will put the video on UTube?

Shaun sorry, missed your post. Yes theya re very hungry at the moment. That is a big family of long tailed tits, apparently they go around in family groups. One thing we have never had in the garden is a woodpecker although we get them just up the road on the golf course.

11 wood pigeons, five male blackbirds, 2 female blackbirds, lots of sparrows, and a robin have all been here this morning :-D

Does anyone know if any of the above will eat clementines?

Hi Rose, my Blackbirds do and they have a taste for grapes too.

Thanks LaGooner, I will chop up the clementines and put them out now...the male blackbirds spend so much time sqabbling they need some extra energy :-D

I had an amazing Robin fight in the garden yesterday. I have a resident male and a young usurper thought he would try his luck at the feeder. Oh dear he did not get of lightly :-D

Blkackbirds like fruit, I put out babanas that have gone over, pears, apples, grapes but not tried oranges. Obviously your Robin thinks it is cock Robin LG. :-D

8 blackbirds this morning, 1 collared dove, 4 starlings, 3 or 4 sparrows, a chaffinch,a robin, a wagtail and last night I looked out and a hedgehog was out eating the remaining fruit.

We had 8 l/t/tits yesterday
2 jays
3 -4 blackbirds
loads of chaffinches
loads of sparrows
a nuthatch
the usual doves and woodpigeons

this morning its quite quiet, which has surprised me:(

Not quiet here, despite the fact it is still snowing they are attacking the feeders and the blackbird is enjoying a feast of some of a three year old Christmas pudding I found in the cupboard. It actually smelled as though it would have been ok to eat, had brandy in it so watch out for tipsy birds.

Black Caps have arrived, l think 3. Quite busy out there now.

Sister has a fence with low wall across the road from her house, so she cut the bramble back and cleared the snow....put loads of food out .... now a mad scramble for food. So many birds:))))

:-( Female Sparrowhawk just took one of the male blackbirds. I'd just put more food out so she had a choice of dish :-| She's sitting outside the garden in the lane eating it.
