An Olde Crone Report 15 Jul 2006 12:14

I don't set out to deliberately offend people but I do call a spade a b*** shovel - I'm too old to mess about. However, GR does seem to have a high proportion of 'delicate flowers' who are reduced to tears by the most incomprehensible things - being advised that a TTF message is better on the TTF board is one such instance. How on earth could I know in advance that this would upset someone??? I have an opinion on just about everything (LOL) but I am able to change my opinions, they are not set in stone and I have indeed changed several long-held opinions about things through reading other people's viewpoints on these boards. Long may the pleasanter debates continue, where every members' view is expressed and respected, even if the rest don't agree. OC

Surely that is the whole point of debate, to share opinions no matter how different they may be. You are never going to have a healthy debate if all opinions were the same, and people should not be discouraged from posting on a thread just because their feelings on a given subject may differ from that of the originator. Having said that, I do avoid coming here on a Friday night now because there are so many issues that arise out of nothing, and I always see people picking over the bones of it all on a Saturday. But it is so wrong. It shouldn't be like that. We all have a right to our own opinions and the right to express those opinions or even oppose the opinions of others without being slated for it. However we all need to remember that RESPECT is the key word here. If you are giving an opposing point of view, it should be done with respect, not only in the terms used to do so, but also treating the other persons point of view with respect. So I will say what others have said. Write your post, then read it before sending it. Think how you would feel if someone sent that to you, would you be offended? If the answer is no, then go ahead, if not sure in the slightest, change it, re-phrase it, but make it respectful and well mannered. T

I don't worry about my opinions hurting anyone, they are part and parcel of me. However If I hurt anyones feelings then that's a different matter and I would try to put it right. Heather x

I tend to be careful on the boards (when I come on) cos I dont think people could accept the real me, in work they always say Yvonne doesnt mess with her words, Im a straight to the point type of person and like I said to my boss when she first started I will tell you straight to your face what I think of you and if I hurt you then thats your problem. Like Adam said wouldnt it be boring if we were all the same, I like straight to the point people cos I never take offence of anyone, I take people as they are. Regards Yvonne

Hi Joan:) I can't say I haven't reported anyone cos I did once a long time ago - there was a thread that I felt victimised someone in a very unpleasant way and this wasn't the forum for it. Other than that I haven't:) I agree with you - Budgie was quite entitled to post on here and I haven't objected to him posting (I did say I don't want him to delete) But I'm equally entitled to respond:)

Good thread David. Don't have enough of my own words to reply to all these many and varied comments right now. But this may describe a little of how I see things:- Anyway: People are unreasonable, illogical, self-centred Love them anyway If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives Do good anyway If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies Be successful anyway The good you do today, may be forgotten tomorrow Do good anyway HONESTY & FRANKNESS MAKE YOU VULNERABLE BE HONEST & FRANK ANYWAY People love underdogs but follow only top dogs Follow some underdogs anyway What you spend years building may be destoyed overnight Build anyway People who really need help may attack you if you try to help Help people anyway If you give the world the best you have, you may get kicked in the teeth But give the world the best you have ANYWAY Helen x

Whoops sorry David !!!! When I read back I thought it may not 'read' as I meant it so I thought I perhaps should have worded it differently, lol !!! That's why smilies etc would really help on here, lol ! Last thing I want is to prolong any ongoing arguments that any peeps may have with each other on here, & I don't take sides cos I don't know either you or No 1 !!!! What I mean to say is, like in real life, we should all try to accept peeps for what they are & unless they make personal attacks, live & let live I say. :0)) Joan

Helen Report 15 Jul 2006 22:51

David - I don't think many of us could achieve what it suggests but not a bad goal to aim for - I understand (though this could be wrong) that it was pinned on the wall of Mother Theresa's office! About a million miles from mine :) Helen x
