Bought Stornoway Black Pudding and Fruit Pudding in Newcastle this morning but unfortunately no-one sells Lorne Sausage.

Down here in Kent nearest I found to a decent Lorne Sausage is Plum Tree Farm;s Lorne Sausage - only £1 for 12 slices (720g) in Iceland and it is not to bad, my favourite breakfast is a couple of slices between 2 slices of buttered toast :-)

It was nice to read in Scotland on Sunday that Edinburgh won Gold in the large city category of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Britain in Bloom Awards last night.

Edinburgh Council environment convener Lesley Hinds, said: “This is fantastic news, I am delighted that Edinburgh has won such a prestigious award.

“This is entirely due to the talents and sheer hard work of our many Friends of Parks’ groups, community volunteers and the Council’s parks team.

Lost Edinburgh: The Ross Fountain

The Ross Fountain was finally unveiled to the grateful denizens of Edinburgh in 1872 – a year after the death of its benefactor. Opinion had been severely divided on whether it should be built or not.

The fountain’s abundance of sculptures exhibiting naked female flesh, a common feature in Parisian design of the era, was considered quite shocking to a good portion of Edinburgh’s less radical society.

One of the most vehemently opposed was the conservative-minded Dean Ramsay, of nearby St. John’s Church, who labelled the nudity-laden structure “Grossly indecent and disgusting; insulting and offensive to the moral feelings of the community and disgraceful to the city”.

Mr Daniel Ross had originally requested that his fountain be placed along the upper pathway of the gardens opposite Castle Street, while there were many who preferred other prominent locations such as Charlotte Square, George Street and Lothian Road. It is entirely possible that the presence of multiple bare-breasted and voluptuous ladies pouring water down their chests may have prompted the town council to opt for a more secluded location for the fountain.

The Ross Fountain’s eventual site under the imposing shadow of the castle rock appears to be the result of a heavily-debated compromise.

It still didn’t please everybody. As a response to the fountain’s erection in the then privately accessed gardens, one passionate objector complained: “I am sorry for the Castle, rock and the garden, and the feelings of any decent-eyed person who cannot avoid seeing this unseemly, and in its present condition nonsensical erection”.

Luckily for the future of the fountain, the initial grumbles did eventually die down and it was agreed that the fountain would operate ‘on a Sunday and when the band plays’. It is worth mentioning that the naming of the Ross Bandstand is unconnected, though you would be forgiven for failing to believe the coincidence.

Whenever I pass and see the cone missing, I don't think he looks right.
I love his cone It's a 30yr old tradition and am glad that the council backed down. LOL

Maybe if they gave the grand old duke a decent cocked hat with lots of feathered plumage, similar to the type worn by General and Staff Officers from the mid 19th century, people would not feel the need to put a cone on his head and while they are at it they could put some plumage on the horses head as well ;-)

The snow has started in Glasgow!

brrrrrrrr I hate snow. I don't want to see another snowflake as long as I live :-(

We've had a storm every night for the last week and a half, thunder, lightning & torrential rain.... the next town south of us was battered with big hailstones on Saturday. Weird weather.

At the moment the sky is mostly blue, but there are a few grey clouds gathering in the hills....... another stormy night?
