Some of us who've been on this site for ages do like to chat to others who we know, but in reality there are many who I only 'know' on this site, not real life. That doesn't stop a bit of friendly banter with those one feels would be OK about that.
I never use Facebook, so am glad of a board to talk about all subjects, not just our researching.
Some people on GR have become friends and it's good to meet up and chat with them in the real world, when possible

I knew nobody on the site when I first joined in, ( well I didn't think I did until Hayley re found Daff for me after so many years)

I'd say Chrissie that within the parameters and T & Cs set by GR , the site is what ever one wants it to be 'for'?

If I choose only to ask friends to help, it is in no way being unappreciative of all the other helpers on the site, nor bothering them in any way I shouldn't think lol.

I don't feel 'slighted' if someone says to me "I am getting help from a friend , so yours isn't needed, but thanks" . Why should they not do so, they may prefer to do it here rather than FB simply because they have their tree details to hand on here, something they wouldn't have on FB. :-)

Susan ( numbers ) I think we may have crossed, I did yes get myself muddled :-) more used to the 'help' threads

I quoted what supercrutch did say up above now

please don't say I misquoted when I just got muddled, it isn' t hard to do right ? and I am a newbie on the 'chat' board ! :-D

I still don't understand supercrutch, if someone saw you were posting for help on 'Gen' does that mean they never look at the 'help' boards ? and if you know who knows your tree and who to ask for help about a particular thiggn why not just send them a message ? :-S

it does come down to it looking 'cliquey' to a newbie .... trust the newbie :-)

chrissiex Report 17 Jun 2011 22:20

and anyway does someone really think that if supercrutch posted a thread on 'chat that said

hello friends who know my family tree drop me a line I have some questions to ask you

somebody would report the thread ?? :-S

I must say I never met people like that on the 'help' boards when I was posting on there before

but there have been a lot of reported threads this week for people posting duplicate threads is what it seems to be anyway .... that seems to be one person doing that and none of the 'regulars' seem to be too impressed ......

I thought I had explained it well enough. I know what I mean, so it seems do others. It looks as though you are the only person who doesn't so there isn't much I can do to address that other than repeat myself which I have no inclination to do at this time of night.

Let's agree to disagree how the boards used to work and how I and some others would like to seek help.

Sorry Chrisie......but not being psychic I wasn't to know you were muddled and not misquoting.....I was just putting the record straight in case it got lost amongst the muddy waters ( I liked him......played a mean harmonica he did)

I thought I explained on my thread how a heading would be......Methinks it should be read again.

But then again......perhaps we had better beg to differ .....our points have been put across and no amount of twisting and turning can change them
:-) :-)

well I did say I' m a newbie to the 'chat' board so I guess I will just have to stay ....... :-S

because I truly am confused, but maybe if I read some more things will come clear, only renewed my sub a week ago .........

new blood here :-D

Chrissie , it has often been said that some people from the old General, didn't venture to Chat or vice versa...obviously changed now the two boards are merged... ditto I have seen lots of posts on the help boards with members there saying that they have never been on Chat, like it's another, much stranger country

That's a shame I think, there are some lovely people on the research boards who would enjoy themselves on here and their non-genealogical contributions would be as much appreciated as their genealogical ones .

i figure if i pay i might as well look at all the boards I pay for lol.

I look at it this way :-)

If I wanted someone to help me track down an ancestor or relative who, for example. was a bigamist...I might NOT want to put those details on the help boards or ask helpers i didn't know personally...what I might do is ask on this board if one of my 'friends' with nothing better to do could help me. Then, whichever of those friends responded , i could then give them the details via pm, knowing they would not publicise something I wanted kept quite.

I could of course PM just one individual friend, but that would impose upon them perhaps when they really didn't have time or inclination. So in asking 'generally' I can pick and choose the person with both the time and the discretion needed :-D
