Teresa I just read what you said back on the other page about if newbies were made to feel more welcome in the first place

I don' t understand , can you tell me what that is about ?

maybe when people have been giving a newbie a lot of family history help on the 'help' boards like happens all day they should also say 'why not come and join us for a cuppa on the chat board' ? :-)

Evening all.....

As you know I havent posted for a while, nearly a year infact, but during that time, I have used FB GR page alot, I hardly knew any of the people, but I just joined in, I personnally always try to acknoowledge newbies if they post on the same thread as I, there are people whom tend to post on their friends threads as I do we all do I s'pose,.....so hello Chrisiex and Daisey I dont think we have met before. :-D

Sorry Chrissie, was busy on another thread or three :-D

I didn't mean anything sinister by it, all I meant was, if newbies don't feel so welcome then maybe it's time we did soemthing about it. Though it's difficult to involve someone when they haven't posted,

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 17 Jun 2011 21:22

yes that is exactly what I was getting at Teresa !

they _shouldn' t_ feel nervous about posting on "chat'

but if it _looks_ cliquey when they look ........

.......... then they will feel nervous ...........

I feel a chicken and egg dinner coming on :-)

supercrutch

supercrutch Report 17 Jun 2011 21:26

Perhaps we need another introduction thread (or re-introduction) :-D

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 17 Jun 2011 21:29

and you see from what I have read on Susan ( numbers ) thread there really are people who only want to talk with their friends on 'chat' ..... if they have a family history question they want their friends to help them, they don' t want to go to the 'help' boards and ask all the members there for help .... maybe the best place would be Facebook ? :-)

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 17 Jun 2011 21:30

supercrutch I was also thinking that, a meet and greet thread that could be kept in a top position ... or maybe even stickied ?

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 17 Jun 2011 21:31

but on second thought that kind of thread would get very big and intimidating, wouldn' t it ? :-)

maybe a sticked thread with no replies that just said 'come on in the water's fine' and invites newbies to join in a thread or start their own thread to introduce themselves ?

TeresaW

TeresaW Report 17 Jun 2011 21:35

Thing is Chrissie, as I said on (was it this thread or another one), I have asked for help on the 'correct' boards in the past, and first off I got a lot of help almost instantly, and friendly help too, but as time went on, I found those boards to be somewhat less friendly than they used to be. I remember a few times the regular helpers would argue amongst themselves about who found what first! :-) So in the end, I found it more user friendly to just post a general help question on chat, although something that required more documentary search would still be placed on the help boards, if I had needed to.

I,

Chrissie, I am at a stage in my research where I generally need someone to trawl newspapers (Susan with #s) does that for me as she has full editorial rights to my main tree. Other members have the most personal information that helps them to help me and that I wouldn't want posted on a public site.

I don't have many general search questions left.

I can see your point however for newbies.
