Good Morning Derek, Thanks for your offer. This is what I have, and where I have become stuck.

Joseph Hall Born 18//02/1852 To Joseph Hall and Hannah Hall formerly Wood. District Hayfield and Glossop.......Per birth cert.

In the 1841 Census I have found Joseph (the father) age 15 Born c1826. High Peak, Glossop. The mother on that census is called Grace, born c 1796 On the IGI she is shown as being married to Robert c1790-1800.

I can't find a Marriage between Joseph and Hannah............lots listed with those names but no Hannah with the name Wood. I was hoping to pick up details of his father from the marriage to confirm the IGI information.

If there were a CD of records for the area I was then hoping to go further back.

I hope all the above is clear. I confuse myself at times, and it is difficult to give facts without rambling on. Anyway, if you can help I will be very grateful. so over to you. :-)

Derek Report 24 May 2009 19:08

Hi Michael..whilst i am unable to help you with your 1925 query, I do have some intersting info on her parents......at least I assume hey are her parents:

Haughton Benson was born in Barrow in Furness in c1875..in what was then Lancashire and is now Cumbria

He married Mary Jane about 1896. Mary Jane was born nantwich Cheshire 1873..and they married..possibly at Lytham St Annes about 1896, where their first child FLORA C BENSON was born 1897

In 1891 they are living at 120 Walpole Street Peterborough..and haughton is a Baker.

I can gurantee the information about this family..but is it the same family???

Heidi Report 31 May 2009 04:47

Hi Derek,

I am trying to find descendants of Robert Cook married to Ameila White and later her sister Mary white. They lived in Hathersage in 1811 - , Also David Cook who married Elizabeth Greaves around the same time. And Richard George Cook. They were all involved in the needle manufacturing business in Hathersage, Derby and possibly other areas. Richard is my great-great-great grandfather. I believe one of them had a son called William Austen Cook.

Any help would be wonderful - thanks!

Derek

Derek Report 31 May 2009 18:16

Hi Heidi.........My records of hathersage are limited, and haven't started searching them yet......
But I can tell you that ROBERT COOK 1791 was born at Studley in Warwickshire..and may have married AMELIA there...although Amelia was borm 1800..so she may be from Derbys..I'll check that..

But by 1851 ROBERT COOK is married to MARY (18 years younger tha him) and they are living at 28 Barnfield House at Hathersage.
He is a needle manufacturer and they have the following children:-

MARY ANN 1839
Theresa Maria 1841
Robert Charles 1842
Joseph Arnold 1844
William 1846
John Francis 1848

By 1861 he is widowed..and only Robert Charles and Joseph Arnold are living with him

He died in 1866

As I said I haven't looked in the Hathersage Parish records yet.....and what I have are Partial..and may not conatin very much.

Will be back later

Hello again Heidi...this is an addition to my message below....As I thought, i have nothing on the Cooks in parish records..but am going to Matlock records Office this coming week..when I will have access to the full reocrds, and will report back.
You probably already know this..but here goes anyway:

Robert Cook came to Hathersage in 1811 from Studley warwicks aged 20.

He set up ROBERT COOK and Co..which surveived into the 2oth Century thought he died in 1866. The company was a producer of Stell Wire. Needles and Gill Pins among other things. In 1861 he had 100 employees of which 20 were children
In 1862 the Childrens Employment Commission heard from one 9 year old girl that she was working 6am till 7pm,and from an 11 year old boy that he often worked a 15 hour day!!

Robert Cook and Co were based at Barnfield Works in hathersage.

All the best

Hi Derek, most of my tree is in notts but we have a Thomas Swift born c1787 who moved to nottingham by 1811 and raised a family there with Sarah nix married 2/6/1811. we know from the 1841 census that he was not born in nottinghamshire. We have very recently found likely parents for him in Samuel Swift and Jane wilks who were married in st modwens church burton upon trent 20/2/1786. The name wilks is significant as Thomas childern were known as 'wilks swift'
Where you can help is that there is a Thomas Swift christened 7/4/1787 in shirland derbyshire son of Samuel Swift and Jane who might be our Thomas. A Samuel Swift was christened shirland 10/2/1759 is this the one that married Jane wilks in burton upon trent? Or did Thomas Swift of Shirland stay in Derbyshire and raise a family ruling him out?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Derek
Wonder if any of your records cover Ilkeston?
I am looking for any information on a William Tatham, probably born in the mid 1700s. He was the father of Benjamin Tatham b.1801 Ilkeston.
Benjamin was the founder of the Needle & Lacemaking dynasty in the town.
Thanks in advance for any help.

PS. William was a Framework Knitter
