Find Ancestors

Looking for more information on, and ancestors of, Henry Fountain NEWMAN. Born c1883. Believed born in Eaton Bray, Bedfordshire. He married Winifred Ellen FAWDRY (from Witney, Oxfordshire). They had 2 daughters, Winifred b.c1908, and Nellie b.1910.

He was my mother's, (Nellie's), father. `have successfully traced the Fawdry side, but have drawn a blank with Henry. Can not find any of his siblings yet alone parents.

It does look very promising. Did not think of 'step' relations. That's where searching via censuses etc. come unstuck.

Explains why when making searches the 'Fountain' part only comes up from 1911. Now to work out whether Henry was John or Ann Burnham's son from an earlier marriage. :-)

I dont see the connection - where does Burnham come in ?

Henry fountain is then too old- his birthdate would be wrong

Hi Catherine. That's the information I have. Shows my mother Nellie (13 Dec 1910 - have her birth certificate so shows how census ages and birthdates can be out by 1 year either way), and my Aunty Win.

Must say I do not understand the huge difference in dates on birth re. 1881 and 1911 censuses?

What does appear to work out (almost but with the usual 2 year variation in DoB) is the possibility that An who was married to Frederick Fountain, remarried John Burnham by 1881. On that basis the Burnham children with the exception of the youngest became her step children?

Several possibilities here.
The 2 censuses show Richard and Eliza as parents rather than Ann but birthdate is nearer. I think you need a little more investigation here.

Some interesting things there.

As you can see the ages are so often wrong on censuses.

On the 1891 one, Richard, the head of the family is listed as 40. However on the 1881 one he is listed as only 8 years younger.

suppose Harry b1881, could well be the Henry i am looking for still unsure here the Newman part came in. As you say will have to investigate further. ttermpting now to locate the date and place of henry Fountain Newman and Winifred fawdry's wedding. Possibly in Witney, Oxon.

I was wondering why Henry Fountain Newman in your original post became Henry Fountain.
when searching FMP I just used the search criteria Henry and Eaton Bray.
ther was no Henry of the earlier birthdate nor was their Henry Newman.
I think you will need the marriage cert before you go any furthur.

Strange as ALL members are recorded with the middle name Fountain

I have checked in BMD sections andd have confirmed marriage of NEWMAN Henry Fountain to FAWDRY Winifred Ellen.
Registered in Southam (Warwickshire). Jul-Sept 1907, Vol 6d, Page 1457.

So it refers to the 'Fountain' part as a second name, but as you have seen on the 1911 Census, and also on my mother's birth and marriage certificates, she and her parents are referred to as 'Fountain Newman'.

The mystery deepens. However i have ordered the certificate and this may provide some answers.
