Thanks again for all of your hard work LadyKira. Loads to work on as regards the 'Fountains'.
Quite a few options there. My inkling is towards Henry FN originally being Henry Fountain, and then changing his name by deed poll. What is the best way of finding this out, and are there any records of such things? Also starting to think the age on his marriage certificate, (which I have), of 29 in 1907 is correct, therefore he was born 1877-79.
At present I cannot locate a single FountainNewman anywhere in the UK, but have found someone with that surname in the USA. Have tried to make contact and awaiting a reply. May well be a dead end but on the other hand may privide some clues.
As far as I know there appear to be no living decscendants of any his siblings.

Robert
You don't have to change your name by deed poll
It is quite sufficient just to begin using a different name .... as long as you do not have a criminal intent.
I left the UK in 1967, but at that time it was quite common to see a notice in the newspaper personal columns saying something like "I, John Smith, will be known as Albertus McCrombie from November 1 1950. signed John Smith, October 31 1950".
That method of doing it, or of just using the new name without any public notification, was far more common than changing your name by deed poll even in the 1960s.
I would imagine those methods were even more common in the 19thC and early 20thC

Robert,
I've had a possibly bright idea. With the job he had, I figure Henry/Harry Fountain Newman could write and would have signed his marriage certificate(s). Did he? If so it is probable he signed the first marriage (if it was indeed the same man) too and you could compare signatures.
What do you think?

PS
Also got "fights for the King" from one of my contacts who did not have any family stories and is skeptical.

Hold the presses!
Just hear from the wife of the direct descendant and they thought he died in the Boer War. I have confirmed that there was an H. Fountain who died in 1901.
Name: FOUNTAIN, H Rank: Private Soldier number: 2043 Unit: 3 Battalion The Bedfordshire Regiment Notes: [Anglo-Boer War Memorials Project] [South African Field Force. JB Hayward & Sons] 2nd battalion Age: Literary references:
Memorial: In Front Of Swan Hotel. Statue. Beds Regiment & County Bedford Bedfordshire England
Casualty: Casualty details: Disease on 10 Jun 1901 at Bloemfontein (2) (Official casualty roll location: Bloemfontein) Unit: 3 Battalion The Bedfordshire Regiment Source: South African Field Force. JB Hayward & Sons
So we have run out of Henry Fountains!

So we are still non the wiser as Henry Fountain Newman
I have found a James Fountain of the right age to be Henry's father.
