Apparently the India Office records will be online soon - I assume BMD's. Perhaps we can find Diane under a different name, or a sibling or her father - well, anything!

I'm pretty sure somewhere in this thread was mention of a acting major, Roderick Macleod ?? Anyway, doing a general search, I happened across the attached where somebody was looking for a Robert Macleod who appears to have been said Roderick - was he ruled out previously?

I think I've looked at that record, but, if so, it was YEARS ago. I could have another look.

Some of the Officers files on the National Archives Catalogue have been newly indexed, giving more detail, like the Robert MacLeod one, which is helpful, although not all are done yet.

If I did look at it, all the index would have said would have been R Mcleod!

Vanessa I read about that too there is lots of info on Roderick MacLeod but there was also a Robert MacLeod who received the Military Cross and Distinguished Service Order and he served in the 8th Seaforth Highlanders but there does not seem to be a service record for him on Ancestry. Maybe someone with a good knowledge of searching both old English & Scottish Newspapers during the war might be able to find out about why this soldier received his DSO & MC.

Cynthia I have sent you the medal card, its actually interesting to see a good few Robert McLeod's & a Robert MacLeod of other ranks, I wouldn't be so sure of the officer rank at all, there was lots of acting corporal, acting sergeant and acting captain during both wars, I was told my great uncle was a sergeant but he wasn't he was acting for a short period of time when the soldiers were separated during gunfire and spent weeks apart.

As the Robert Macleod you mention (8th Bn) was an officer, his records wouldn't be on Ancestry - they don't include officers.

There are 12 WW1 Officers files at the National Archives for R Macleod/McLeod. Will look at them (gradually - it might take a while!)

If you go to www.1914-1918.net/15div.htm there is a dedication to Robert MacLeod who was commissioned into the 8th Seaforth, it goes on to say he was a trench mortar officer.

The 8th Seaforth was a K2 regiment formed of mostly volunteers in 1914, so wherever Robert was before then remains a mystery.

I came across an article regarding the British artillery in the beginning of WWI and it gave one of the reasons for it being so poor as the sergeants who had been promoted had to accomplish their officer and gunnery training in 8 months. So it is possible that Robert was a sergeant prior to the war.

Have looked at 3 WW1 Officers files today at Kew -
WO339/36766 Robert Macleod, 8th Seaforths, born 24/10/1890, single (a bit young to be Diane's father). Schoolmaster. Served 27/2/15-20/2/19 2 different addresses - Edderton House, Edderton, Ross shire and View Cottage Edderton, Ross-shire.

WO374/45065 Lt Robert McLeod, RGA. Born 29/8/1886, married. Previously Serg, no 17597. Enlisted 1903. Was in Hong Kong from Oct 1907 - date illegible. Address in Sept 1919 27 Dundee Terrace, Edinburgh. Previous address 171 Dalry (?) Rd, Edinburgh. Discharged 1919.

WO374/45068 Robert Watson McLeod. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, but had served in RGA (T) for 4 years sometime 1915 or before. Born Anstruther, Fife. Aged 28 in 1916. Married Margaret Jane Walker 9/9/14. 1 child John Walker McLeod, born Glasgow 9/6/15. Address in Nov 1915 63 Calder St, Crosshill, Glasgow.

Hi Ann, yes you are correct about officers records but was hoping to find anything just something maybe prior to the time served before becoming an officer, so am I right in assuming that when a soldier became an officer those previous ranks and information is kept and contained in the officers file?

Well done on searching through the three officers above, so we can rule these three out as there is no Stornoway connection and no female child. The Robert from 8th Seaforth Highs was he the same chap who was awarded the MC?

Yes, any previous service SHOULD be in the Officers file but as these files have been heavily weeded, that's not necessarily the case.

There's also the fact that if he served after 1921 his record would still be with the MOD.

Don't know whether the 8th Bn man was the same as the man awarded the MC. I have more files to look at, though.

WO374/45066 Robert Duncan Macleod, b 27/6/1885, Greenock. 2nd Lt, Highland Light Infantry, previously Lance Corporal, no 266807. Mother Jessie. Occupation Librarian. Single in 1916. Lived 50 Thistle St, Dunfermline.
