Kind folk have looked for a combination of households with a mother Kate, a daughter Ishbel and a son Donald - but no luck so far.


Kathy, what would you advise? It's a bit much to ask you to go through the whole census but how can we tie those three names plus Stornoway together? Is it possible to look at the 1911 census for boarding-type schools in Stornoway? Mind you, what name would you look for........????? :-S

Sorry not to have replied earlier but have been really busy with research .

I have looked at all families every surname where the mother is Catherine and there are children called Donald and Isabel /Isabella and the only family I found was the McKenzie household I posted about earlier .

Can only think that D ( or what ever her name was ) was not on Stornoway at the census time .

I've brought this thread up again because I have had a pm from a member who gives me the following information:


There is someone on another site who is looking for info about someone called Kitty Macleod who was born in India in 1914 to a father who was in the army in India.

The poster says that Kitty was from Lewis, but don´t know whether her family were from there or she just lived there. It says she was a famous folk singer.
Could Kitty be a version of Catherine?

Just wondering if Diane could have been sent to Aunt Catherine because her parents had gone back to India & didn´t want to take her with them?



Now, would any of you kind sleuths like to give this a go to see if there is a possible connection here........????

Seems that her father was with the Seaforth Highlanders, she was born near Simla & had a sister Mairi. Her father isn´t named in the obit, but another poster speculates that he could have been called Kenneth.

I've been through the 1911 census for 1 Bn Seaforth Highlanders in India. Have made a list of the officers - no Macleod. There are various men with the surname Macleod in the lower ranks, though, but none named Robert.

Gave myself a thumping headache yesterday afternoon trying to check all possible scenarios.
The similarities between Diane & Kitty are so strong.
I wondered if Diane´s mother had died & her father re married & had more children.
One thing seems certain. Either he wasn´t called Robert, or he wasn´t an officer.....
or both.!!

Had a look at Kitty's ( Catherine ) death certificate today .

Her father was Kenneth Macleod ( market gardener ) and mother was Anne Macleod ms Macleod

Has anyone tried the Angus McLeod archive? There are records of MacLeods living at Calbost in Stornoway. Ishbels, Murdos, Donalds but no Robert and no Diane, but then again some unnamed infants.

I was born some years after my grandmother died, so never had the pleasure of meeting her.

I was really confused by the fact I grew up believing Robert MacLeod was in the Black Watch, my father then said he was in the Gordon Highlanders and more recently the Seaforth Highlanders. I was just playing around on the net and found a page on the Scottish in WW1, it pulls on those regiments together which was reassuring., but then at the bottom the page it said: this page is dedicated to men like Robert MacLeod who was commissioned into the 8th Seaforth Highlanders......

So, apologies if I'm rehashing:

If Robert was commissioned into the 8th Battalion Seaforth Highlanders in 1914-1915 when it was formed in 1914 at Fort George, that is consistent with the need to send Diane to the care of relations.

It does not tell us where or if he was serving prior to then, but it is reasonable to assume it was as an NCO.

From the slim pickings on the web it seems Robert had a good war, with at least one further promotion, and maybe an MC, but all promotions were temporary.

So whatever his origins Diane would probably only remember her father as an officer, and would quite naturally have given that as his profession.

Lots more to do but at least I'm beginning to have some confidence that Robert existed.

I have a medal card I downloaded for Robert MacLeod/McLeods a while back there are a few on it and it interests me for one reason in that I can't find any other records for these men which I would assume they were destroyed during ww2 by fire/water damage. Diane you are right men did transfer from different regiments as I found with my own family members. I can send the medal index card in pdf if anyone wants to view it, many of you might already have seen it at national archives, just send me a direct message or leave a post here.
