Don't know if you can help, but I am trying to get my great-great grandmother's maiden name. I'm at a brick wall on this so any assistance you could give would greatly appreciated!

Her first name was Eliza and she was born in c1826 in Berkhamstead and was the second wife of Thomas Tarbox, a Labourer also of Berkhamstead born in 1811.

I think she was married before, as the 1861 Census shows that they have a son who's called William Winter living with them. My great-great grandfather's first wife passed away in 1854, so I'm guessing they married some point after that.

Any help you can give at all would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Michelle

Re William Henry Chester (again):

- Ramsgate was on his first child's birth certificate. It's always possible that he grew up there but wasn't actually born there or vice versa. I have found in the 1861 census a William Chester born in 1854 and christened in Loughborough in 1855 with a mother Sarah and a Stepfather Joseph Forman. Thomas may have died earlier.

- I don't know that he was still in England for the 1861 census - that was just another place I looked for him.

- There is no record on the shipping lists to NSW or Victoria of Thomas or Sarah Chester and there were no children born to parents of those names in NSW between 1855 and 1885.

- I have found a W Chester who entered Victoria in 1877 on the ship Alhambra from New Zealand who was the right age. There were only 3 other Chesters on that ship but one had no initial and the other was "F".

- His father's occupation was left blank on the marriage certificate. William Henry was a caretaker. Family folklore was that he was a jeweller in Kent, which is highly doubtful since he ended up as an engineer on the goldmines in Southern Cross in Western Australia. He 'walked' across Australia from Sydney to Southern Cross with his wife and first four children and died in Perth, Western Australia in 1920.

- Witnesses were Henry Campbell and Caroline Sainty, who most probably were Annie Louisa Campbell's oldest brother and oldest married sister. Henry Campbell was also her father's name. Suggests that William Chester had no family in Sydney where they married.

Sorry there's not much to go on.

To ask for advise on where the records for Ramsgate are kept.I have a few people i help aboard and they have contacted records offices and libraries and they have been very helpful.Once you locate where the records are they sometimes can do a search for you.Maybe a small fee but i would say it would be well worth it.

Hi Michelle,yes i would still like any information you can give me.I'll give you all the information i have and hopefully you can fill in the blanks for me.My grandfather's name was Alfred William Stevens his father was Richard Stevens and his mother was Camela Tansley.On the 1901 censis Alfred was one.His mother Camela was 23 at the time and richard was not there.He could have been away on a ship cause I know he was in the navy.I think Richard and Camela married in Malta.I can't find Richard anywhere after the 1871 censis which he was 5 at the time.Richards father's name was William Stevens and I know that william was still alive in 1901 censis,he was 79 at the time.Also William was a Master Mariner in the navy.Alfred Stevens born 1900,Richard Stevens born 1866,William Stevens born 1822.Anything else on Richard and William and on Williams parents would be fantastic.I hope this all makes sense cause I've written things out as it comes into my head.Thank you for everything so far.Joanne,Sydney Australia.
