I have looked and looked and nothing for Alexander on the 1871-81 which leads me to think that he was using his middle name in earlier census's or that he married in his middle name-Alexander.I have seen a couple of poss family but not able to be sure on these.Difficult cos alot of Coal Miner's in this area and John is a very common name.I don't believe he was born in Spennymoor as no previous census records give this birthplace linked to Alexander.
I think the only way to resolve this is to take a visit to Durham and look at the Parish records.It is quite possible that his birth was not registered as this was not compulsory until 1870's.

Hi Michelle I have just popped in and found that my post to you that i did last night isnt here so will tell you again I seem to be able to get into the site you gave me I sign in and it sent me to the Freename search then
when i tried to go further it just wouldnt work.

Well the 1901 has confused me???I saw the marriage of 1896 and i have found a poss for a John married to a Sarah Jane although birthplace is not the same and he is called John Thomas?The 1901 has no John Joseph or just John's born in Hunwick.So he is either mistranscribed or missing from the 1901.Do you know of any children the couple had?
