DizzieLizzie Report 14 Jan 2011 13:16

The sky suddenly went very dark (even though it's been dull for the past few days anyway) and it has just thrown the rain down. I went to look at what effect it might have had on the river as it has lately been running fast and high. Whilst I was looking I saw a wood pigeon standing out in it with his wings back as if he was washing his smelly armpits in the shower. Funny old bird.

I will look forward to seeing the Parakeets Von.Is that in this country ?
We had a Heron sitting in one of the big conifers yesterday. It looked ridiculous lolI could just see it's head and neck.I did get a pic but it is not good enough for the blog.
It has been very quiet bird wise today.I haven't really seen many feeding at all.Yesterday they were going mad.

Von Report 18 Jan 2011 23:02

Hi Jane
Yes I live in West London. The parakeets visit quite regularly now but I do hope they don't nest as they are so noisy.
Take care
Von

I didn't realise there are Parakeets in the wild like that.I saw one near here a while ago,but assumed it had escaped from somewhere.Lovely pics by the way.
I saw some birds in the horses field today and don't know what they are.
They are probably about the size of a fieldfare. They had Grey heads, brownish backs,I think black tails and whitish/creamish tums.Any ideas what they might be?I will take my camera tomorrow and see if they are still there.

I just had a look in the bird book. The nearest I can see is a White throat Warbler.I'm not sure though.

Hi Von Jane and Jude
Yes I too had seen these green parakeets in the wild before. They are beautiful and so exotic aren't they. When we lived in Windsor over 20 years ago they started to come on our peanut feeders and I took some lovely photos, which quite amazed people we knew. When we walked towards the castle a week ago they were flying overhead then even in the cold, which I thought might have worried them.
Today we have been to Stockbridge in Hampshire and saw several Buzzards and kestrel too. The Buzzards look like Eagles and are truely beautiful.

Linda :o) XxX

Jane Report 20 Jan 2011 18:22

Linda,we have Buzzards around here and Red Kites. They are just amazing to watch.
I remember some years ago when we had the pond there was a Rosella(I think that's what it was called) sat on the edge drinking the water. My neighbour managed to catch it in a huge fishing net and he looked after it while we put notices out to see if anyone had lost one.I think in the end it went to a sanctuary. We also had a parrot in the garden the same year.It seemed strange they decided to land here lol. Then Last week there was the Heron sat in the Conifer lol

Anyone have any ideas how to get rid of Rabbits???We have a big problem with them digging tunnels all over the place.

Tecwyn Report 23 Jan 2011 17:35

Hi Everyone,

Walking on the beach this morning I noticed a flock of 25/30 birds busily turning over the shingle. As I got closer I recognised them as Ringed Plovers. They seemed oblivious to me and I was able to get within about 10 metres of them. I haven't seen these on the beach before. No sign of the Oyster Catchers that are normally there.
On the way back there was a small flock of Long Tailed Tits moving swiftly through a the copse.
The buzzards make daily visits over the village from higher on the mountain, but I haven't seen the Red Kites for a few weeks now.
We get visits of three hen pheasants daily, they arrive to clean up the seed underneath the feeders, this has been happening since there was a shoot just outside the village shortly before Christmas.

Jude - How is Madoc these days? My old chap still plods on, everything cracking up - except his appetite that is.

Tec.

Hello Tec:o)
Just popped on pc before l go back to sleep, l got a bug or sommit:o((

Madoc's general health is great thank you, although he will be having a check up soon re his back leg and a wart type thing on his neck. He keeps scratching it now and it bled yesterday. The leg may need an op to put a metal plate in so the leg can be straightened. This is from his accident before we had him!!

The Little Ringed Plovers you saw are quite an usual sight this time of year, atleast as far as the RSPB site says. If its ok with you l will tell the lady at the South East Wales Biodiversity Records Centre. Where abouts are you?? pm me if you'd rather??

Poor old Ianto, its good he likes his food though. Madoc is the same re food, the lady at the kennels said last week its so good to see a dog eat everything and so happy:o))

Take care
jude

Tecwyn Report 23 Jan 2011 23:28

Hi Jude,

Pleased to hear Madoc is in good health and I hope whatever is on his neck can be sorted quickly.

It was the Ringed Plovers on the beach (Charadrius hiaticula) not the Little Ringed Plover (Chardrius dubius)

The Little Ringed Plover is apparently a summer visitor and as the name suggests it is a bit smaller than its cousin the Ringed Plover.

I will pm you with exact location if you want to pass this info on.

cwtches to Madoc and extra biscuits, and I hope you will feel better soon.

Tec.
