so what it all boils down to after 103 replies and seven pages that we stick em all on oil rigs - I think that is a most satisfactory end to a brilliant in depth discussion - pity Errol the Sheep didn't come on board - he would have enjoyed this - he wasn't with us was he?

my OH did not want to do his National Service, believe me, but once in he really enjoyed it and saw quite a bit of the world as well - Singapore and Kuala Lumpur - it gives people a chance to learn new skills, including social skills which many don't have today, respect, and the meaning of hard work - bring it on!!

National Service but only if it is run sperately to our porfessional armed forces who don't deserve to be lumbered with our low life...By the way what would you do with the rising number of convictions in the elderly. The 73 year old convicted of rape and the OAP who was so drunk his car mounted the pavement and put a pedestrian into hospital for 2 months then there was the elderly couple caught stealing plants out of our local park for their own garden....what do we do with those folk?

ooh am I going to have to get down off this fence again?!

re National Service...what exactly are we talking about here? military training or something similar to the VSO?

There are plans afoot to keep all kids in school/college till age 19 unless they are 'training' for something....is that going to help?

What about the old 'apprenticeships'? enabling non-academic kids to learn a trade without staying in school.....low wages, but learning skills, self-respect and respect for others into the bargain?

Just throwing in a few thoughts here! lol

I agree with those who say National service....

The police are too busy trying to meet petty government targets than fighting real crime,

Hi Rose,

Just seen your post, I work in FE and the 14 - 19 programme is becoming more and more popular, enabling less academic kids { one of mines on this programme} to make a good contribution to society,

I agree with you,
