Hi Hope you don't mind me butting in. I smoke about 20 a day and would love to stop. Has anyone tried cold turkey or are patches the only way. Nic

Hi Nic It can be done but very hard to do. When I gave up about 9 years ago, I used the 24 hr patches which suited me, I also used wigleys chewing gum Make sure you have smoked the last fag before starting, because a lot of smoking is habit and before you know it your hand has gone to the cigarette packet and another cigarette is lit. Get a say a calender and little stickers to put on each day and you can keep a track of how you are doing, the money and tax you have not paid is a great incentive to keep stopped. Why not open a account at your local Building Society, put the money you have saved, in there, if you look through the postings on this thread you will be amazed how much people have saved. Tell people you have stopped smoking, try to keep out of smoky places at first, stop anyone smoking in the house, keep a ash tray full of butts and soon your sense of smell will come back and you wonder how you smelt like that before. People will always help you on this thread All the best Nic on your attempt. Keep on talking to the people here. James

Well Done Carol glad you got through that awkward spell 8 weeks and it is getting easier There is a tape you can get which helps you to relax it might be possible to borrow one from a Local Library, Do not know for sure, I think I might put a thread up and ask. Have not seen Deb from outside DC around lately she had stopped again for her son, must ask her next time she is on site. James :<))

I quit cold turkey after reading the Allen Carr book ( I should have bought shares the number of people i have told to read it!) and it wokred for me. The first few days were....... challenging, but i haven't smoked in 18 weeks! I don't even think about it at all now, even if i am with a smoker. Four months, six days, 5 hours, 16 minutes and 19 seconds. 3155 cigarettes not smoked, saving $1,419.97. Life saved: 1 week, 3 days, 22 hours, 55 minutes.

Well Done Bridget, are you using patches or very brave and going Cold Turkey, it helps to have something to do with your hands, keep posting on this thread, it will help to keep your resolve up, ban smoking in the house, after a few weeks your sense of smell will start coming back and you will think, I smelt like that? It does get easier as you progress, try puting a sticker on a calender for each day you have not smoked, put the money and TAX you have saved into a special account at the Building Society and you will be amazed how quickly it builds up and you can buy yourself a treat or a holiday. Read through all the postings on this thread and take heart from them. James

James Report 24 Mar 2006 14:27

Hi carol I am sure it will not be as bad as it seems, I remember that when I stop smoking and was clearing my lungs of the soot I occasionally brought up blood but it passed if you look at your tongue now you should be starting to get rid of the staining and fur which accumulated on it. good luck with the Dentist.
