The Royal family don't succeed to the throne or marry to please the whim of the people. The rules of succession are exactly that - rules. I really can't get to grips with the animosity towards Charles and Camilla and the idolisation of Diana. They are just people like you and me who make mistakes like the rest of us. The fact that they are in the public eye does mean that they will be scrutinized more than most, but shouldn't lay them open to the amount of character assassination that goes on.

in fairness to the queen she has 9/10 always put her country first, with charles and her its 10/10 for them.i dont want a king like that,he should set examples for us,but not the ones hes been setting, xxxjoy

Right!! I'll stay in this. ((smiling)) Quote 'Any democracy is only one step away from a dictatorship' Exactly, my mom always said 'it's not what the Queen does - it's what she prevents by being here'. And please remember that many Americans wanted George Washington to declare himself as king. They weren't terribly concerned with a 'democracy' to start with. Hmmphh. 3:05pm here and the TV news just commented on the 'lap dance' thingy - but apparently he said 'No thank you, I have a girl friend'.

Talking of cuppas with 'Er Maj' Lynda, when I was 4 my parents took me to London and we went to Buckinham Palace. I sobbed and sobbed because I couldn't go to tea with the queen, saying that if she came to our house we'd give her a cup of tea. They had to find a policeman who explained to me that the flag was showing that she wasn't home, she was visiting Charles in boarding school, so she couldn't invite me in for tea, she wasn't there! That dried my tears, apparently and I went home happy!! :-)

The point about the Royal Family is that they are just like a dictatorship, in that the people do not get to decide who is sitting on the throne, so discussing whether or not Charles would make a good king, or should abdicate in favour of William etc is pointless. Incidentally, there seem to be lots of folk in favour of William taking over from the Queen, but I am old enough to recall when people swooned over Prince Charles as an eligible bachelor and lapped up stories of his staying out late, being seen with glamorous women, etc. Given enough time, people will no doubt be moaning about William and suggesting his son would be a better bet etc etc. nell
