This thread has made me realise what a silly plonker I am at times.

We had a red phone box by the tube station where I live. Must have used it so many times years ago. Just realised it is not there anymore.
When it was removed have no idea.

At Oval tube station there is not a phone box but there is a pay phone on the wall.
Checked it is still working. 8 year old grandson was so fascinated by it he checked the price 60p. Just didn't have any cash on me - hardly ever do - all cards around here except the local markets.

Hope the box is not moved before the school hols - promiced I would carry some coins so they could try it out. Must get a photo because it is bound to go soon.

Phone books are still produced. Are they passed their sell-by-date?

have you noticed that phone books are getting smaller with each edition - just had a new Thomsons Directory - very small indeed

Dermot. I think they are past their sell by date. I treat mine like restaurant menus now. Through the door (because they are small now and go through letter box) and straight into recycling bag - still in their cellophane wrap.

Can cellophane be recycled with paper - must check :-S

I disagree totally that they are past their sell by dte - not everyone has access to the internet to find addresses and telephone numbers - probably ten years hence they will be, but not yet

Where my friend lives in Ryedale North Yorkshire there is no signal for mobile phones.nearest signal is 4 miles away from her house.

No red phone boxes within 10 miles one way and 15 miles the other way.

Yes she lives in the back of beyond but it has some wonderful views over the farm;and.

One reason why they have to have BT for their landlines as they have no other providers as it means laying cables from the nearest town and it would cost them an arm and a leg.

Just as an aside.if they wanted GAS pipes laying to the hamlet from the nearest village it would cost each household £2.000 each.

Sue. How does that community up in Ryedale communicate. Was that the valley with the old lady who became a celebrity about 30 years ago? Documentary about her isolated life, I think.

If the sheep get out on the road or intruders come into the vale, how do they tell each other, I wonder.

Perhaps there needs to be some way of getting some of them affordable satellite phones for emergencies :-S
