Sue. How does that community up in Ryedale communicate. Was that the valley with the old lady who became a celebrity about 30 years ago? Documentary about her isolated life, I think.

If the sheep get out on the road or intruders come into the vale, how do they tell each other, I wonder.

Perhaps there needs to be some way of getting some of them affordable satellite phones for emergencies :-S

Where my friend lives in Ryedale North Yorkshire there is no signal for mobile phones.nearest signal is 4 miles away from her house.

No red phone boxes within 10 miles one way and 15 miles the other way.

Yes she lives in the back of beyond but it has some wonderful views over the farm;and.

One reason why they have to have BT for their landlines as they have no other providers as it means laying cables from the nearest town and it would cost them an arm and a leg.

Just as an aside.if they wanted GAS pipes laying to the hamlet from the nearest village it would cost each household £2.000 each.

I disagree totally that they are past their sell by dte - not everyone has access to the internet to find addresses and telephone numbers - probably ten years hence they will be, but not yet

Dermot. I think they are past their sell by date. I treat mine like restaurant menus now. Through the door (because they are small now and go through letter box) and straight into recycling bag - still in their cellophane wrap.

Can cellophane be recycled with paper - must check :-S

have you noticed that phone books are getting smaller with each edition - just had a new Thomsons Directory - very small indeed

Phone books are still produced. Are they passed their sell-by-date?

This thread has made me realise what a silly plonker I am at times.

We had a red phone box by the tube station where I live. Must have used it so many times years ago. Just realised it is not there anymore.
When it was removed have no idea.

At Oval tube station there is not a phone box but there is a pay phone on the wall.
Checked it is still working. 8 year old grandson was so fascinated by it he checked the price 60p. Just didn't have any cash on me - hardly ever do - all cards around here except the local markets.

Hope the box is not moved before the school hols - promiced I would carry some coins so they could try it out. Must get a photo because it is bound to go soon.

Jude :-D :-D You can read my mind :-D ;-)

I wanted to be one of those retired men who stand at the side of the road with a speed gun and stop motorists for speeding. But phone box security would be even more fun in my hi-vis and Doc Martens. :-) :-)

I think red phone boxes are redundant because vandalism in most if not all parts of UK is so rife. If we cannot defeat this mindless vandalism, only alternative in my view is to move all public facilities (and I think I do mean all) inside buildings used by the public.

So, if a largish supermarket, garage etc is built, it has to provide and maintain certain facilities like a phone. There are then always staff on site to deter vandals.

Just a quick comment to Hank Marvin - chapels traditionally are within Cathedrals or were chapels of ease attached to a Cathedral or large church and some distance away. More recently (200-300 years) the name has been used in non-conformity also and, in Wales at any rate, people are "Church" or "Chapel". And, if anyone cannot see the relevance of that, neither can I frankly. :-S :-S

I think this thread is about this article that was on BBC news last week...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-22861389

If people don't /won't fight tokeep their red phone boxes then they will lose them.

Tecwyn Report 16 Jun 2013 21:35

The red telephone box in my village takes cash and cards. It has never been vandalised as far as I know. There is no appropriate building in the village where the facility could be located.
As the mobile phone signal here is blocked by the mountain, and at best very poor, the kiosk is in frequent use by tourists, walkers, holidaymakers, and others.
The poster that suggested that the red kiosks are now redundant and should be removed is wrong - they are essential in many rural areas.

because you get things wrong all the time and it is soooooo funny

Chapels are churches are cathedrals - wherever one or two are met in my name and all that? lolol

Thank you for giving me so much enjoyment John and thank you for keeping tabs on my time spent online

Cathedrals are not chapels. Sorry to correct one so versed in religion. Telephone boxes is the subject of this thread. You have many other threads you are playing on. So why this one?

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 16 Jun 2013 20:05

oh for heavens sake - it was a joke that may have been slightly over your head about designers. I got the wrong chapel at first but the joke remains. Grow up and move on.

JustJohn

JustJohn Report 16 Jun 2013 19:58

Taffs Well, thanks AnnC :-D Nothing to add, as the Metropolitan Cathedral does not look anything like a red phone box. From any angle. And, whatever we like to call it, it is totally irrelevant to thread. A red earring, as we say. :-) ;-)
