Until a few weeks ago I used to have auto renew on, and for the last couple of years have had an e mail about renewal.

I turned my auto renew off last year and recieved this email a week or so before it was due last Jan

Dear jax,

We've noticed you have recently changed from a continuous to a single membership.

Did you know that continuous membership means you will remain paying at your current price point? You will pay £34.95 for as long as you are a member on Genes Reunited, despite any price increases that may occur. Not only this, but you‘ll also get uninterrupted service, leaving you to concentrate on uncovering all about the lives of your ancestors.

It's quick and easy to ensure you aren't effected by any price increases, just visit the 'My Account' page here and make sure you tick the box for continuous membership.

We hope you have fun finding your family,

The Genes Reunited Team

Strange thing was....I had been paying approx £9.95 for the last 18 months...£34.95 was what I paid when I first subscribed as a gold member ....Looks like they do not update their records

The right hand does not know what the left is doing. Have never seen a commercial business is such disarray.

The Renewal business seems a little haphazard....everyone with a different story!
I'm on auto-renewal and get a renewal reminder 14 days before my card is debited, I paid US$11.59 (£7.96) in Dec 2012 for the next 12 months' sub.
However, depending on what the next renewal reminder says in Dec 2013 will determine whether or not I will let it run or cancel. 'Tis easy enough to chat and play family history stuff elsewhere for free :-)

As for the who needs who, well, I agree with BK on that one (page 7, timed 19.31) :-)

hmmm

28 days notice required?????

Kense

Kense Report 2 Feb 2013 08:57

Looking at the T&C it seems to me that it can be interpreted as meaning that you only get 28 days notice if you have continuous membership ticked in your account. Otherwise you get the standard 14 day notice.

Wisechild

You said you have turned your auto renew off??.....why are you expecting 28 days notice then? you have effectively told them you are not going to renew

They may send you one a week before hand, saying if you don't renew it will cost £20

Got this on 30th January: I have been a member for 10 years.
I assume it is for the year and not 6 months !

Hello Brian,

Your membership to Genes Reunited is about to come to an end.
You don't need to do anything because you've asked us to continue your membership automatically.

We'll renew your membership for £7.96 on 12th February 2013 using the card you used last time. If we are unable to do this, for example because your card has changed, we'll let you know.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 2 Feb 2013 20:01

Brian looking at Janes maybe you should check if 6 months or a year but if on cont. membership I think it should be a year.

wisechild Report 3 Feb 2013 14:13

Yes I did remove my auto renew, but reistated it a few days later after I had checked the subscription rates Genes were offering me.
I was just worried that they would automatically take double what I was expecting as like many pensioners, we are on a very tight budget.
If I could see a valid reason for doubling the subscriptions I would give it due consideration, but can´t see that basic members are getting anything they didn´t have before.

wisechild Report 9 Feb 2013 07:22

Just recieved my renewal notification, stating that as I am on auto renew, the money will be deducted automatically..... 7 pounds 96p. No mention of whether it´s for 6 months or a year!!!!
Only 14 days notice instead of 28 as stated in the T&C.
I have e mailed them to ask how long the sub is for & pointing out the discrepancy in the notice period.
Not expecting a reply until at least next week.

wisechild, when you go into subscription details in your account it will tell you what membership your currently have and when it is due for renewal.

My subscription says 6 months and will be automatically renewed on March 28. And when they do automatically renew it will be for six months.

My subscription last September was £7.96 for six months. I had switched off the autorenew and chose - when I was ready - to renew. At that point you get the choice of 6 or 12 months...and at the time if my memory serves(!!) it was cheaper to do 2 x six months than 1 x 12.

wisechild Report 9 Feb 2013 08:27

I know what it says.....Standard 12 months membership.
I also know that 7 pounds 96p is what people are being charged for 6 months.
I need to know exactly what I´m paying for.

Kense

Kense Report 9 Feb 2013 09:02

7.96 GBP is what long term members pay for 12 months provided their membership has been continuous and provided they have not been advised of any increase.

So you shouldn't have a problem and since your account says 12 months, that's what it is for.
