back in Aug 2011 I started to query discounts offered to members and this was part of a reply from GR

I can confirm that as you are a long standing member that has continually renewed their registration this is why you are recieving it at a cost of £9.95 instead of £19.95 and you have done since 2007, if your membership expired and you did not renew within four weeks of the expiry date the cost would then be £19.95 for 12 months Standard membership

So this does not explain why I only paid £7.96 in Sept 2012

The Team still do not have a clue

Wondered what happened to Katie. Or is that another one of their strangely worded auto replies.

GR must be a bit like the AA then Amanda, I got a renewal letter from them last week, telling me because I had been with them for so long I was a valued customer and a gold member, and because of this I could renew for just £170.00, I rang them to say, your having a laugh aren't you, got it for £61.50 :-D

Same thing happened last year, and on the letter it did say to phone them if you weren't happy with the costing, which I did, and they said that's why we ask you to phone, to see if we can make it cheaper, I said why don't you just offer me the best deal to start with, silence from the other end :-D

This year I have gone through all of my standing orders, and queried costs, to date I have got about £400.00 back in rebates, and reduced my monthly outgoings by about £75.00 a month, if only I had done it years ago, I'd be a millionaire :-D

I renewed this morning - but I had received no reminder, the membership had expired and it took me a bit of time to realise why my use of site was paralysed! I been gold, but had already decided to downgrade to standard, I paid £19.95

I must be feeling better again. I have written to Rachel/Katie (whoever is there) and amongst complaints that there is no system to the rates of fees, I said that I would not go back to Trading Standards as I felt that letters to geneaology magazines might have more effect as to how GR treated their members.

I did point out that they are still renewing at the lower rate - even today.

I will probably get banned if I do decide to renew!!

jax

jax Report 18 Jan 2013 23:11

Once you downgrade you just get charged the normal yearly or 6 monthly rate, does'nt matter whether you joined last year or 10 years ago.

GR don't want standard members, maybe thats why they are trying to push them out or maybe they may see the platinum membership as being a bargain and take that up instead :-D

The price has gone up because of extras?

What extras?

I use my tree and the boards.

Olympics ?

Do not remember that being mentioned

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 19 Jan 2013 00:26

I don't remember the Olympics being mentioned to me ............

....... just that I would get a discount that would bring my yearly subscription down to £7 something from £9.95, as long as I renewed within 4 weeks of the end of my subscription.

jax

jax Report 19 Jan 2013 00:27

Maybe they did'nt mention it...just like not telling people their subs are being increased :-D

jax Report 19 Jan 2013 00:57

It was Jonesey who said it was to do with the Olympics....so I just took his word for it, he either saw it somewhere or perhaps made it up :-D

SylviaInCanada

Just renewed and I have been charged the amount of £15.96. How can they defend the difference in renewal fees? Awaiting a reply with bated breath!!

AnninGlos Report 19 Jan 2013 11:00

Glad you decided to bite the bullet and renew Chris.

And I don't remember anything about the olympics being the reason for the discount.

Island Report 19 Jan 2013 11:23

It's a shambles and always has been with the current owners.

I queeried the randomness of discounts a couple of years ago and was lied to.

They make it up as they go along :-|

Chris you probably won't get a reply untill at least Monday, they say they work at the weekend but I have never seen evidence of this in all the years I have been here.

You know, I don't think less than £2 a month is bad value! I know the IT connections have been somewhat chaotic recently. I now have my main tree on A--y as being much easier to manage, but I still get interesting feedback and connections from my original basic tree on here. I do get help from other members, I enjoy some of the word games, and indeed this Chat thread - I don't use facebook or other chat sites, I get a valuable little bit of socialising here!

I think you are right in suggesting that GR really want everyone to pay extra for the newer access to records, so that they can afford to improve further access to such information. They coujld be a bit more professional in keeping us properly briefed.
