I thought the opening was great with travelling all the way down from the head of the Thames, leading us into the city. I really think we did well, of course there were bits that we would have wished were different but overall, it was a great achievement.

I read in the paper that the Queen has hosted Olympic dinners every day this past week so I am sure she was really tired. But I did think it unusual that she didn't manage to drag up a smile. At one stage we did think Prince Philip might have been dozing Lol. At his age I wouldn't blame him.

Rita, I've just listened to it on iplayer again and the children definitely sang Queen, not King.

I've said what I thought of the rest on Lynda's thread.

Rita Report 28 Jul 2012 18:38

Thank you Gwynne. I was so sure they said King. my hearing is not too good at times. I wondered why at the end they sang Queen then they showed you H, M and she looked miserable. I thought she must be tired she has done a lot over this year. I could never have done what she did.

god bless

Guinevere Report 28 Jul 2012 22:16

Yes, Rita, I felt a bit sorry for both the Queen and Phil being kept up so late. It would have been kinder to start the ceremony an hour earlier, I'd have said.

Kinder to the audience as well.

Did they start at that time because they needed it to be dark. I found it late too, never usually up that late, goodness knows what time people got home afterwards who were in the audience.

Mauatthecoast Report 28 Jul 2012 22:24

I was left wondering how the majority of folk managed to get home at that time in the morning? no underground or buses? ....at least taxi drivers should have made a fortune....... :-)

Error pages are soooo annoying :-| think I'll say good night to all

I felt really sorry for the poor athletes ......... the ones who walked in the Athletes parade AND who stayed "in the building".

It was probably well after 1 am before they got to bed .................. probably messed up a lot of their training schedule.

Yet to be part of the Opening Ceremony is a highlight for them.

Hope not too many miss out on personal best times (if not a medal) because of the stupidity of have the Ceremony held so late.

Quote from one North American paper ............................

"Turns out his [Danny Boyle] show was kind of like British music hall on acid [especially the middle part]"

That commentator did like the first part!

LadyScozz Report 29 Jul 2012 06:53

Watched the replay (began at midnight!)

I thought it was great, but it started out a bit slow.

The lighting the the Olympic Flame was absolutely brilliant! :-D

Who didn't think out the transport issue? A bit daft to have that many people looking for a way home & no public transport :-P

Joeva Report 29 Jul 2012 08:45

Underground trains and buses were running to 2.30am - an extra one hour than normal. Haven't seen any complaints from people who attended the Ceremony about getting home - which I guess would have been widely reported had there had been any problems.

Eldrick

Eldrick Report 29 Jul 2012 09:20

I agree, the late finish was totally stupid. I watched it till the end and i had to be up with the sparrows for 10 am the next morning. Only 9 hours sleep and it spoilt my own personal training regime for the local mini olympics next saturday, when i am through to the final of the yard of ale. My finely tuned athletes body just wont take going to bed an hour later than normal. Criminal, absolutely criminal stupidity it was.

Vera2010 Report 29 Jul 2012 11:04

I for one thought it was great to go onto 12.30. I was able to watch BB (I know, I know) and watch the best bit of the Opening Ceremony in my opinion.
I was then able to post on here and still look for those Bradford's. What's so special about getting up early anyway.

I am devilish interested to know what sports or activities Eldrick is going to be taking part in next week at their village sports day....

Swimming relay in the village pond?
Darts knock out ?
Naked mud wrestling?
Big toe wrestling ?

whatever it is I do hope you're supported well in it ;-)

Janet

Janet Report 29 Jul 2012 12:19

Perhaps Eldrick has secretly invited the Czech Olympic Team to a Wellie Winging competition hence their giveaway fashion that they thought we might not notice being in Wet England with other eccentrics. They can't fool us.

Wishing E all the best for the finals of the yard of ale competition. -j

.....or should that be point something of a metre, or litre, ou en francais......

Roger

Roger Report 29 Jul 2012 13:42

Well I only saw the end bit which was brilliant.

BUT you lot saying how late it was, THINK of all the people who normally work into the night. i'e' the people who gets your morning papers out, the police, nurses doctors do I need to go one.

Also I saw the torch come though my village as in relaity it is a once in a life time event.

So stop cpmplaining as we who loved it did not make you watch it did we.

You could have always gone to bed at your normal time, or did you not want to miss anything, if so don't complain.

Remember our ancestors fought for Freedom of Speech, which I am exercising in this post.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 29 Jul 2012 13:44

Very bluntly I might add too. I don't think anyone was complaining really more just commenting.

And goodness knows what people working nights has to do with anything. I suggest Roger that you read the whole thread to see that people enjoyed it. If we had not we would have switched off.

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 29 Jul 2012 14:13

My ancestors also taught me good manners, Roger, shame yours didn't do the same.

If you'd bothered to read the thread properly my comment was about how late it was for The Queen and Prince Phil, given their ages and Phil's recent illness.

Like Ann I have no idea what night workers have to do with this - but they could take your advice and not do the job if they don't like it.
