As some of you know I am having a tough time at the moment, what with my marriage ending and struggling to get somewhere to live well I went to have my eyes checked today, they did the test for Glaucoma and my reading was high!!!
They said it was 11 last time and now it is 19, if it goes to 20 or more I could have Glaucoma!!! I don't know what to think, my life is tough enough as it is..Do you think I should make an appointment to see my GP or am I being silly.....
I really don't need anymore health problems as I have enough already to cope with....

I wasnt sure what to do as the optician didnt seem that bothered as it hasnt quite reached 20....
She did say something about hypertension...Could that cause the pressure in your eyes to go up?? Think I should google it.....Im getting worried now...

Sorry to moan guys xx

Hi Jules, you are not being silly at all honestly, even if it is just for piece of mind, you really must go and see your Doctor. Sometimes we blow things way out proportion in our minds and so a visit to the Doctor can be most reassuring.
You are the most important person in your life right now............so dont delay, make an appointment today!! xxx

Get it checked. Hubby is borderline Glaucoma and he has six monthly checks at the Eye Clinic in Maidstone Hospital. he has Travatan drops to put in every night. Best not to let Glaucoma take a hold cos it causes peripheral vision loss.
Hubby's was picked up by the Optician who advised him to see the doctor who then referred him to the Hospital.

My Hypertension was also picked up by the Optician as she could see pinched veins. This is now kept under control by a tablet every morning .

Best to be safe than sorry !!

Hi Jules, could only happen to you eh?

I expect all the stress is sending your bp sky high so could cause other problems too, best to get it checked out and treatment will then be given to sort things out.
Keep trying to find a chance to call you but been busy here, will do my best to make contact very soon

Good luck with finding a new home,

Lizx

Please do see your doctor who should check your BP, as this can contribute to a high reading, but I am surprised that the optician didn't advise you of the next steps regarding the Glaucoma, i.e. whether or not you need to come back for further tests or see a specialist at the hospital.

Your GP will need to be in the loop, but is unlikely to have the necessary expertise nor the equipment to test for Glaucoma, and so can do little else but advise you to go for further tests in a few months time or refer you himself to the hospital specialist.

I was in exactly the same position 18 months ago and my eye pressure was monitored over 6 months by the optician. As there was only minimal improvement he referred my case to the hospital who checked his results and recommended I use Travatan each day. They provided a letter for my GP as it is he who has to write the prescription.

I was then given a hospital appointment about three months later and they confirmed that the drops were having the desired effect, and booked me back in for six months for a further check. I am now waiting for another hospital appointment when, all being well, they plan to refer me back to the optician for ongoing monitoring, probably on an annual basis.

It is likely that I will have to take drops for the rest of my life.

Please don't panic, you are not going to loose your sight overnight as the condition is progressive. The specialist did say to me, however that there is no magic cure, but with proper monitoring and treatment, the condition can be controlled.

Remember also that a single high reading in itself does not necessarily mean you have a problem. Like BP readings they can go up and down from day to day. It is the trend over a longer period that is more important, which is why I am just a bit surprised that the optician didn't recommend a period of monitoring.

Good luck.....!

Good luck with the GP Jules, I suspect that all the stress is affecting you BP and therefore the glaucoma reading. worrying about it could make it worse so try and relax and see what the doctor says.

Good luck at the GPs ...but your blood pressure can affect your eyes and so can your diet and stress so DONT panic as you are managing really well when you are under such pressure ....

Your haousing people will keep you waiting till the last moment ..they have no heart in the matters of you being upset or frightened about the fact you have no home .

Take Care ..treat yourself to some nice healthy food and let things settle in your mind ...

Yes I was homeless once with a new born baby he was six weeks when they housed me!!
