I saw this on the news this morning, Muffy. I'm not sure it's right to assume that the fifth who would consider voting for the BNP are stupid in the sense that they were particularly swayed by Nick Griffin's appearance - I suspect it's more to do with the fact that at least a fifth of the population are racist and homophobic or they feel strongly about immigration and not strongly about race and sexuality.

So........ a fifth of 1,314 electors will vote BNP, or at least seriously consider it. I don't think I'll lose any sleep over the possibility of Mr Griffin getting to be PM.

Btw, yet again, I have to agree with Uggers.

I think immigration is the key factor here, rather than inherant racism. Many people are concerned that we are accepting so many immigrants when there are already problems with rising unemployment and housing shortages. That doesn't mean that anyone who has those concerns would vote BNP, I certainly wouldn't.

Secondly, polls like that mean very little, but one fifth....that's a low risk really against mainstream politics, and I have a feeling that, as with many people who voted in the last euro elections, they were protest votes. Come the general election, I really think that proportion of voters will be considerably lower.

I think it's immigration too TW.

Voter apathy will be the key to this election I think.........THAT is the reason why they'd be likely to gain a seat imho xx

I disagree, Teresa - there's a lot of racism around. I know the BNP are feeding on the amount of tabloid induced panic about immigrancy that's about but that doesn't mean there isn't a lot of racism.

Doubt it will happen in my lifetime but I do wonder if the BNP will become more mainstream in time.

Plaid Cymru are now accepted as a serious political party and hold many seats in Wales. They were extremists not too long ago.

If anyone has attended a Daffyd Iwan concert the English bashing was rife and caused much merriment among the audience. I have met him four times and he was always very pleasant to me personally. However, such a high profile entertainer could and did encourage many indigenous Welsh to 'the cause'.

I'll sit and watch with interest. The great British public can be a fickle lot!

Uggers, that wasnt' what I meant. I meant the reason for voting BNP is possibly more based on immigration concerns (and protest against the current government) rather than racism. Of course there is racism, that's how the party came to be in the first place, and sadly there are still many many racist crimes committed every day.

Racism is wrong, but it exists, and I'm sure the majority are not burying their heads on the issue, but concerns over the high level of immigration is another thing altogether, its an economic problem and one I believe needs to be addressed, but definitely NOT by voting BNP. However I do believe that some think that is the way to go.
