Winter Drawers Ever Near

Winter Drawers Ever Near Report 23 Aug 2009 22:12

You are making me feel homesick now Wenders.

I'm not going up to Scotland until next Spring with the grandkids to see my family.

I must admit the air is cleaner and the water softer. Makes the most marvellous cup of tea. I drink gallons of the stuff. Big floury morning rolls, square sliced sausage and fruit pudding, scotch pies and Mother's Pride Plain Bread...... yummy.

I don't hanker after them so much now as my butcher has all his supplies sent from Scotland and gets it all for me. Only trouble is my family and friends down here in Surrey keep nicking it all.

Well the porridge I was leaving until last.

None of this Quakers stuff for me. Brought up on good old Scots Porridge Oats.

Freezing cold milk, non lumpy porridge and salt.

Quite uncanny but one of my daughters has always taken her porridge the way my grandad did and he passed away many years ago.

Porridge in one bowl, milk in another. Spoonful of porridge dipped in the milk. Me, in goes the porridge and freezing cold milk poured on top.

Roll on winter. It's my insulation. Sticks to my bones so I don't need to wear thermals!

Has to be with a little salt Wenders.

Had a friend who loved porridge and covered it in honey and sugar. Bloody awful taste.

Just what you get brought up on I suppose.

well, on your journey down the Northumberland coast, you should stop off at Craster.

Apart from it being a village worth visiting, it has the original herring smelting sheds, where home-cured kippers can stilll be bought (EU notwithstandiing)

The smell is unbelievable

First for me I think.

Looked at the clock and well past my bed time. Usually just turn off with computer in a panic and never sign out to those threads I contribute to.

Must seem rather rude and my apologies to all.

Night everyone and in the words of Dave Allan.... may your God go with you.

I went to Edinburgh in April 2000, and it rained most of the time, I still fell in love with the city tho and went back in mid July that same year. I packed long sleeve things and tops and nothing suitable for really summery weather as I had been warned not to, had to have a shopping spree in the sales for strappy tops and sunhats as it was a scorcher of a week, the local people said they hadn't had weather like it for years. Wonderful!
I would love to live in Scotland for a year and travel all round to see the different places, it is a fascinating place.
