Violet's height was a distinct advantage in her job as she was able to clean the chimneys - of which there were many - by climbing into fireplace and up the chimney. Unfortunately she would come out covered in soot. However this was easily fixed by the laundry maid hanging her on the clothes line and hosing her down. Not very nice for Violet but a source of great amusement to the Duchess.

If it's an asylum you are opening, Tec, then I can assure you that I will be very happy to advise you. Of course, you know, we would have to start with that person in the maid's outfit!

It is a bit "Let's do the Time Warp" with one lot doing gday and another lot doing g'night so Rocky Horror Show quite apt.

Mad Maid of the Moors - is that Myra Hindley in a raincoat?

A son of a friend called his love birds Myra and Ian - but not many people got it.

You should not give Bed Baths in your maids uniform Allan you are bound to get it wet, where a plastic apron or pinney (pinnie) as my mother used to call them.

Persey.

Good afternoon/morning all :-))

Right, Ive come to the conclusion that Sue, you must change the heading of this thread....Instead of For Aussies only.... it should read For Mad Aussies and Brits Only. What do ya reckon?
I,m wondering have they added something new to our drinking water? na it must be that if you are mad enough to start looking for ya missin rellies in ya family trees, then your just plain mad!!!

Mr and Mrs Tec
Application for employment...
Qualifications- I'm mad, I'm not a hard worker... cos I will sit around all day reading and when I'm not doing that I will be walking around the country side. So can I apply for the position of resident horse groomer?

Well... I,m off to feed the family,
Enjoy your night Down Under and have a great day Brits :-))

Good evening/morning all. Hope you are all well.

Carole you're right - we're all mad and getting worse. I never used to be like this but you're all a bad influence. Tec's the worse one. He gives us the ideas and then quietly sits back while we run amok:-)) Of course, our Allan doesn't help either.

Hello all, it has taken me ages to read through over a weeks worth of pages.

Tec, if you still need staff,I could apply for the position as cook. I do have the allotment,so can supply all the fresh veggies and as an ex science teacher,I am used to dissecting things,so gutting the sheep will be no problem - well that would need doing you know if you rustle a fresh one from the hillside

I will type out a serious catch up post and add that shortly.

LindainHerriotCountry Report 10 Sep 2009 09:30

This is my serious post, just to get it over and done with,

First of all I would like to thank everyone for the good wishes. It was very touching as I read through the last week to find out that you were all thinking about me.

I can’t remember where I was up to with the mum saga, so I will have a quick round up.

When she was admitted they said she had pneumonia and a bladder infection caused by e coli. She was responding to the treatment for those, but she also had some sort of blood sepsis which was not responding and they had no idea where the underlying infection was coming from. She was having severe pains which they thought were in her chest, but to me sounded more like those she used to get from her ulcer.

Anyway they shipped her into the cardiac unit where a junior stand in doctor, over the weekend, told her that she had had a heart attack. This was based on the blood test results, but the sister on the ward was pretty certain she hadn’t had a heart attack, the results being caused by her extremely poor kidney and liver functions. By this stage she was bright yellow and it was mooted that she may have gall stones, so she was sent back to other ward, where they hadn’t been looking after her.

She needed an MRI scan to see if it was gall stones, but she couldn’t have the necessary dye injected because of her poor kidney function. One good thing about the heart ward was that they put her on medication to slow down her heart rate which was in the 140’s all the time and to make the rhythm more regular

It was at that stage that we had to decide whether to go away or not. As she was reasonably stable we did go, but only because my sister came up to stay for five days, so she could visit twice a day in my place. The holiday was good, but I ran up an enormous mobile phone bill while I was away.

The night before we came back, my brother who had returned from his holiday was shocked by how weak mum was, so having landed on Tuesday afternoon, we raced straight from the airport to the hospital. It was a good job we did because mum had finally had the MRI scan that morning and they decided that she did have gall stones ,so were proposing to do an endoscopy the following morning, hoping that they could put a stent in the bile duct, so that the stones could maybe work their way out.

Mum was terrified of course, but she was going to give her permission as she felt that she had no other options available to her. I was so glad that I was there for her and she was just grabbing my hand saying how glad she was that I was back. That made me feel dreadful of course for leaving her in the first place.

Anyway they did the procedure yesterday morning and it was a great success. They actually managed to remove several large stones, so haven’t needed to put a stent in. They are hopeful that they have got them all out, so the bile can flow and the infection can subside.

Of course as nothing is ever straight forward, during the procedure which is done while using the scanner, they discovered a large mass of fluid in the back of her abdomen, which they think may be pus and is possibly an abscess. She has now been moved onto a gastric ward and handed over to the surgeons, so they can assess the new problem. The options seem to be to do a biopsy, to drain it with a needle or to do nothing, so we shall have to wait and see.

In the meantime poor mum is so weak that she can’t even push her self up in bed, she is totally stuck in whatever position they put her in and of course due to the appalling standard of care, she now has a large weeping blister on her bum.

Isn’t old age something to be looked forward to. Oh and the day we came back was the fourth anniversary of dad’s death, though I don’t think mum knew what the date was ,so I didn’t mention it to her

Hello Sue, I think we cross posted, I did read all of the kind thoughts and was very touched by them. My long hospital report is now on the bottom of page 131

I am just trying to catch up a bit, I need to whizz round and sort the house out, my son in coming up from London at lunch time and staying overnight so he can go and see mum

SueMaid Report 10 Sep 2009 09:45

Linda you were posting as I was writing:-)) I hope you've had a good break because it would seem you have a lot ahead of you. I can well imagine your mum was pleased to see you. I don't think you have any reason feel bad about going away - you'd be no good to anyone if you don't take care of yourself. Your poor mum must've been in agony with the gall stones - I've had this problem and it's very painful. An abscess would also cause pain I should imagine. Hopefully it will all get sorted and your mum will be comfortable. My dad developed a bedsore while in hospital. It got worse in the nursing home and both places blamed the other for allowing it to get to the state it had. I alerted his doctor who went to the nursing home and blasted them for their lack of care. From then on he was turned regularly day and night and it started to heal. It's dreadful that we have to cause a ruckus just to get our elderly people the care they deserve. Hopefully with you on their case they'll do what they should have done all along. Take care of yourself, Linda. You know we're here to "listen" anytime you want to offload.

Sue xx

Edit - That should cheer your mum up seeing your son. And you too.
