Hi everyone, i just need you to tell me that everything will work ok for my Dad. He has had quite a few bad angina attacks over the years and the last one put him in hospital for two weeks due to complications with his diabetes. Yesterday he went to hospital to see the consultant because they told him back end of last year he needed a bypass. Anyway the consultant has now told him that he needs a triple or possibly a quadruple heart bypass quite urgently. To say it is a shock is an understatement. We didn't realise he was so ill. It will all happen within 4 - 6 weeks with any luck. I know he will feel like a new man when he has it done so everyone tells me, but it is just all the worry and seeing him stuck in hospital again. I can't help worrying about both of them and how they will cope.

Sorry to hear about your dad's problems and your anxiety.

My father in law had a major heart operation c.1996
He has never looked back and has been able to enjoy a full life since.
He was away in Italy for Christmas, but back for his 91st birthday earlier this month.
If I'm half as able at his age, it will be great.

I hope your Dad has an equally good outcome.

Hi Teresa - these bypass operations seem to be fairly routine these days and I think we probably all know someone who has a bypass op - my next door neighbour had a triple years ago and is in his eighties now, so keep optimistic, I'm sure he'll be fine

Thank you Gwyn and Ann, you hear of people everyday having these kind of operations, but when it is a member of your family it hits home doesn't it. I am trying to jolly them along and say things will be ok afterwards so fingers crossed for me xx Thanks for replying.

As others say, and not wishing to make light of it, but it does seem a fairly routine thing these days.
I have an elderly relative who had a triple heart by-pass and he recently celebrated his 92nd birthday. Hes still pretty active.
Another relative had heart surgery some yeras ago, and he is approaching 90 this year and is as fit as a fiddle, travels all over the place!!

Thanks Karen, i was worried that they wouldn't be able to travel abroad for their holidays again, They have just started having holidays after being married forty years and not being able to afford them etc. so i don't wont them to stop going. Lets hope he lives to be in his 90's and beyond lol! so he can carry on tormenting my poor mum.

Positive thoughts for you dear Dad and I am sure all will go well for him.
I know it's easy to say don't worry because we always do don't we?.
LIke the others say they are a routine Operation these days. I worked in a Major hospital and there could be up to 12 Triple By passes a day performed so be assured they will take good care of him. He will be fighting fit in no time and back to nagging your mum.

Hi, Theresa. Again, not wishing to make light of it, I know quite a few people who've had varying amounts of bypass (i.e. double, triple, and quadruple) and it's like a new lease of life, apparently. :-))

However, one or two of them had problems afterwards. Now, whether it was to do with the op. or not, I don't know. Would you like to know what it is? Oh alright then - WIND!

I repeat, that's not trying to make light of it, but that's what happened.

Haha Glenys, i don't think that would bother him cos he has it really bad now, we put it down to all the medication he is on. poor mum!

I had a thread up last week, we had received a message to say my son's father in Malta had had a triple bypass over Christmas, hadn't even known he was ill, he is in his late 50's. Then I got a call last weekend to say my cousin in Manchester who is in his late 60's had had the same op, I knew he had been waiting for some time to go in and have it done, except the hospital lost him off the waiting lists so a good thing his wife's friend who works at the hospital, looked into it for her and got things moving. I will be ringing her soon to find out how he is as she hasn't rung me since Sunday when he had had a few problems with the irregular heartbeat he had prior to the op and which had supposedly been sorted with tablets.
I am sure your Dad will be fine and even if they don't feel like traveling abroad in the future, possible due to higher insurance costs, they will still be able to get around and away as they want.
Good luck to him and you and your Mum too who must naturally be worried, but must feel positive now.

Hi Liz, thanks for that, i did reply to your thread last week about your lads dad in Malta, Have you heard anything and is your lad still not too bothered about going over there?.

I am pretty sure my dad will be fine, after what people have said on here he should be like a new man, ( i think mum would like to think that too lol !.)

Foreign travel should hopefully be OK.
My OH's sister lives in Italy and their parents visited her 3 times last year, including one trip to walk in the hills. They also travelled to Gozo for a holiday.

Lol re the comment about your Mum's possible 'new man' Teresa.

Haven't heard anything further from Malta so I am sure all is ok, the Essex lot would let my son or me know otherwise, and I don't think my lad will be rushing over there, maybe he will take a holiday there in the summer but in all honesty, his father doesn't bother with him much so why should my boy make any effort. I think he sent an email to say he hoped he would feel better soon, altho knowing my boy, it might have been a good intention that hasn't happened yet! He works two jobs so gets a bit stressed and behind with things as it is!
Just tried to call my cousin's wife but she is probably already on her way or at the hospital, so left a message and she will more probably ring me when she gets home, visiting finishes at 8pm I think.

Teresa, I had a trple bypass 8 yrs ago, and was well enough to stand having a mastectomy a yr later. The only problem I have is occasionally the breast bone seems to dig into me when I bend down to do up my shoes! Ican do tne housework, the garden, shopping get my hands to meet over my head. Just sometimes get out of breath, but since I couldnt go out except in a wheelchair before the op, who's complaining? By the way, I am insulin dependant, have been for 20yrs.

Dad has an allottment which is just beginning to take shape, i hope he can keep up with it later on in the year, he was talking about having to pack it in and mum was agreeing with him, but i hope he doesn;t .

Don't forget - if he has to go on warfarin to tell the docs, if he likes a drink!!
My mum didn't have a bypass, but a repair to a 'hole in the heart '+ faulty valve she was born with. During the op they realised both her valves were faulty but only repaired the one.
They waited until she had had 4 children - not bad for someone who wasn't meant to live beyond the age of 9 and who should NEVER have had children - she was 77 when they operated. Afterwards she had to go on warfarin, but mentioned she liked a 'tipple'. Now she HAS to have 2 glasses of wine a night - shame!!!! LOL
