Shirley,

Yes that is the family and Henry is on the 1901 census aged 13.

We have looked at WW1 casualties and cant find him there

Rambling Rose,

Alfred died aged one in 1891 - will look up that passenger list entry, thanks,

Stephen

stephen Report 17 Oct 2014 19:40

There is a possibilty that Henry joined the army - as did several of his brothers, but we cant find any enlistment for him. However, there is a Harry Martin from Walthamstow listed as being posted to Burma in the 1911 census. At that time he was away in Shwebo. It gives his age as 25 but it was not unusual for recruits to add a couple of years when joining up.

There is also a medal record for Henry and Harry Martin (same person) showing his army number as 636 (East Surrey Regt) and 24366 (The Queens Rgt) but we cant find any other reference to those numbers.

Regarding the outward passenger list for Bombay on the "Arabia", the only entry I can find for a Henry Martin returning from India is a chap living in Belfast. but no telling if that was him in the first place!

Perhaps the army record may be the best bet - but we've drawn a blank on those soldier numbers.

Thanks, Stephen

as you know we are having trouble finding out what happened to henry martin, one of our ancestors who lived in felton st hoxton and was last seen mentioned in the 1901 census,we dont think he moved abroad and we dont think he was killed in conflict, but we have found a henry martin convicted on two occasions in 1909 at old st police court, the age and location would add up,but we cant find any address etc,if anyone can come up with further information we would be very grateful many thanks stephen marden

Hello Stephen - do you have dates for those 1909 convictions? Might help with checking newspaper archives.

stephen

stephen Report 17 Nov 2014 19:13

The dates of the convictions of which there were three not two were 21/6/07 for stealing bread 8/7/07 minor assault and 22/6/09 for a violent assault on a woman of which he received 6 months hard labour at wormwood scrubs,as i said if anyone can add anything we would be very grateful,by the way his occupation was a horsekeeper many thanks Stephen Marden

Hello Dizzy,

Thanks for posting that info. We have already come across that 1911 census entry and it is interesting that the birth year is ahown as 1886 - two years before Henry was born, but it was not unknown for recruits adding a year or two to their age when joining up.

He is shown as being in the East Surrey Regiment and we have a Medal Record for Henry/Harry Martin as being in the East Surrey Regmt as Soldier No 626 then in the Queens Regmt as No 24366.

So far we have not been able to find anything further on the soldier that held those numbers. Its looking promising but if anyone can find any further info on him it would be a great help.

Regards, Stephen

Indistinct on some pages, but appers to have been 33 yrs of age in 1919 He had a daughter Doris Sylvia Martin died 22 days old in 1918, and he was a Dairyman .

Might be helpful if only to eliminate?

stephen

stephen Report 11 Dec 2014 16:07

Thanks Rambling Rose,

I think we can eliminate this Harry as in the 1911 Census he is shown as a Dairyman born in Richmond. The Harry martin we have been looking for has those Soldier Numbers 636 and 24366 in 1915 according to his Medal Roll when he was in the Queens Regiment.. As he was brought up in Hoxton, being a dairyman seems unlikely.

its probably been the nearest we have been to finding out what happened to henry martin after the 1901 census, although we havent found him we still remain hopeful, its possible he may have gone back to live with his parents at 15 seaford road tottenham after the war or with his brothers, one thing which would be quite interesting is to look at some pictures of felton st and the surrounding areas including pubs etc, internet has only a few pictures of the area, would be very interested if anyone has any collections of pictures of the area once again thank you for your efforts stephen marden

If there is a Facebook group relating the area then it would be worth joining and asking on there for photos. I have managed to obtain copies of photos of where my grandfather was born and the houses in that area were demolished about 70 years ago
