Good to know you've now found Henry and family, Stephen. It's always nice to hear a success story it gives hope to those still searching for the 'missing link' :-D

I'm pleased to say the Henry Martin saga has now come to a close.
Through BMD certs, Electoral Rolls etc, and not forgetting all those of you who have helped, we have managed to unravel his story and found not only him, but his wife, a son and a stepson - all with families - and the picture is now complete.

May now start a thread on one of the other family members!

Success!! - So Far.

Marriage Cert confirms Henry Martin married to Susan Emily Usher in 1926
Death Cert confirms Susan Emily Martin's death in 1937

Now waiting on Charles birth cert and Emily's previous marriage.

Nearly there, thanks to all who have helped.

Looking more and more like Susan E was Henry's wife who we know died c1937. Now with her being Usher, and the stepson Charles. it all seems to fit.

Will see what the certs tell us when they arrive

Will chase those up. We have Emily Martin with Henry in 1921.
I suppose it MIGHT be possible that Emily and Susan Emily could be the same person and that they didn't actually marry until 1926?

West Ham RD and later Essex SW cover Walthamstow

At last we have found the missing info on our grand uncle Henry Martin (1888-1952).
He was indeed in the army from 1916 as No 202510 and we know that he and his wife moved to 15 Rosebank Grove, Walthamstow in 1918. We only know her first name as Emily and that she died about 1937. They may also have had a son Walter who was at the address in 1933.

Henry was an ARP warden in WW2 we are sure he was in the civil defence unit at Walthamstow. He lived on at Rosebank Grove until his death there on 29th March 1952 but the surprising thing is the informant on his Death Cert is Charles Albert Usher, stepson, living at the same address. He was also the beneficiary of Henry's will. We know nothing about him at all.

Thanks for all your help in solving this mystery and if anyone can add anything else regarding the above we'd be equally grateful.

That's one of our options when we visit London again.

Tracking back from 1939 looking for Henry at that address in Electoral Rolls would be my plan of action.
Hopefully you would find him with his wife and or adult children.

Thanks to the 1939 Register we now know more about our grand uncle Henry Martin who was a window cleaner living at 15 Rosebank Grove, Walthamstow, Essex.

The register confirms his exact date of birth as 1st February 1888.

By the time of the register he was a widower but we have no details about his wife or any children.

All we know, from his sparse army records, is that he enlisted in 1916 and his wife moved from 88 Clacton Road, Walthamstow to 15 Rosebank Grove in 1918.

At that time he was a PoW and repatriated in December that year.

He was in the South Staffordshire Regiment
Original Service No 2807 but that changed to 202510

To Recap:

He was born in Walthamstow to parents William and Emma on 1st February 1888.

We know all his family details but lost track of him after the 1901 census when he was living at home at 13 Felton Street, Hoxton.

If anyone can help with any details of his marriage, wife’s name, or any children we’d be very grateful

If you're still looking for old photos of Hoxton, just Google "old photos Hoxton", and several websites will be shown.

As for your earlier post about Service Numbers, where you said:
"He is shown as being in the East Surrey Regiment and we have a Medal Record for Henry/Harry Martin as being in the East Surrey Regmt as Soldier No 626 then in the Queens Regmt as No 24366."

Have you tried contacting either of the regiments?

Yes Dizzi,

This is the same famiiy. We also have a tree on Ancestry and we have now found answers to almost all queries apart from what happened to Henry after 1901
