I would say the next step is to post the name here and we can all look for it.

Oh Christine, we won't tell you off.!
Maybe the person was registered with another name, or more than one name and didn't like it.
Put details on here if you like and we will see what we turn up.

Christine,
I understand your frustration.
I have someone in 1891 census and 1901....that's it... No birth, marriage or death....supposedly born c. 1882

Try posting the name.
It's amazing what a different set of people can find sometimes.

I have the same problem with my paternal grandfather born 1884.

And his 5 siblings.

BMDs - nah.

Baptisms - one sister - must have been by then aged about 7, one unknown brother (at least my father never mentioned him) again no Birth reg, no death reg (and I am assuming he died young as my father never mentioned him!)

I think they may have been registered in their mother's name as I do not know if the parents ever married as I have never found the death reg of my gr grandfather's first wife. BUT, without at least one birth cert - I have no idea who gr grandma might be so no idea what name the children might be registered in!

So, you have my complete sympathy - I understand exactly what you are going through and I hope that you have better luck than me!!!

Dear Christine

Do you know your great grandmother's maiden name from one of the other children's birth registrations?

What was your grandmother's position in the family; eldest, youngest etc.?

I ask as I can see some others with the name but I am not sure if I have the right ones.

If you are sure that you have a registration of one of her siblings you could send for that birth certificate and so find your great grandmother.

Thankyou Janet..
Isabella must have been the second Youngest..
The last born child was Edith 1917 (sedgeield)
Maiden name of GGrandmother was Mitchinson..
Many thanks

I am beginning to wonder if Isabella was registered under a different first name than the one she was known as (as was my grandmother).

I've had a good search round and I have to admit your grandmother has me beaten at the moment.

At least, though, you are able to go one step further as you know the name of your great grandmother. My maternal grandfather was illegitimate and my great grandmother took the secret of his father's name to the grave with her!

Ah, the marriage looks more likely, then.

Maybe Isabella's birth just wasn't registered. Just one of those things.

Maybe her mother was unwell and father was busy looking after the others and worried about his wife and new baby. Grandparents/relatives filling the house and he just forgot until it was just too late.

At least it looks as though you can get back further with the marriage and births of the others.

Good luck

Christine
If you get a copy of Edith's birth certificate you will know if her mother was called Catherine.
