Shelly
I was mulling over this problem in bed last night, and came to one conclusion.
The problem is that family memories are not always correct, and as you will have seen as you read through this thread, ozi, Lew and I had real problems last night trying to fit your "facts" according to your uncle into what we could find online. In fact, we couldn't find anything that fitted your facts, except that a Joseph Hocking did marry a Mary Alice Adlum. Even your grandmother's birth date didn't fit.
I think the way to proceed is to first get the birth certificate for your grandmother if you do not already have it. This will confirm the names of her parents and her mother's maiden name.
Then, if, as you think, the parents are Joseph Hocking and Mary Alice Adlum/Adlam, you should purchase the marriage certificate for those two. Largely to see what Joseph says is the name of his father (if anything) and to get his occupation and address at the time of the marriage.
Then you should return to THIS thread, add an update, and let us try again with some basic facts at hand. It is better that you do that rather than start a new thread because other helpers will be able to see what has already been researched and will not waste time reoeating it all over again.
To find a thread on which you have previously posted, look to the left of the screen and you should see a yellow box Top Tips, click on My Threads in that box and all threads on which you have posted a message will appear.
1. Eva's birth registration
Births Mar 1909 (>99%)
HOCKING Eva Haslingden 8e 75
2. Joseph and Mary Alice's marriage registration
Marriages Mar 1905 (>99%)
ADLUM Mary Alice Haslingden 8e 171 Hocking Joseph Henry Haslingden 8e 171
To get these certificates, go to www.gro.gov.uk, click on Ordering Certificates Online in the box to the right of the screen, follow instructions.
The GRO number they ask for is the set of 2 numbers to the right of Haslingden (ie, 8e 75 for Eva's birth).
Each certificate will cost £7, but it is the ONLY way to be sure that you are folloing the correct family.

Hi Shelly
Looking forward to hearing what your mum has to say about all this!
I think you really do need to get Eva's birth certificate if no-one in the family has it.
It is amazing how many illegitimate babies were born in early days!
I don't think it was all that much of a sin as we have been led to believe ..... or maybe it was the so-called "middle class" that considered it so bad, and even they had their share of "premature" babies.
One of my ggrandfather's sisters had at least 5 babies out of wedlock, her mother helped to bring them all up!
Farming families in particular were quite glad to welcome an unwed mother or already pregnant girl as wife to a son ...... it proved that she was fecund, and they would have grandchildren to help on the farm!
The problem for us searchers now is that many of these illegitimate babies invented fathers when they got married ..... and this sends us off on wild goose chases to find John Smith with father Eugene, a whistlemaker (who never actually existed, but sounded good on the marriage license!).
waiting to hear from you after Wednesday!!

Shelly, I'm now TOTALLY confused!
Does this mean Joseph Hocking & Mary Adlam are NOT Eva's parents? Harry & Annie are? What is Harry's relationship to Joseph as they (Joseph & Mary) have both been found & there is the link to Redruth. Is Harry a brother. Have we found him?
Definitely got to sort this one!!

Thinking aloud:
Remember Joseph & Mary's marriage? Here again for reference.
Marriages Mar 1905 ADLUM Mary Alice Haslingden 8e 171 Hocking Joseph Henry Haslingden 8e 171
He is a Joseph Henry. Perhaps he was called Harry by his family. Your mother may be mistaken about Ann.
