Hi, I have a dilemma maybe you have some suggestions. My Gt Grandfather Henry George New B 1874 in Oxford m a woman called Louisa Elizabeth Cole Bex in 1896 in Thornton Heath and they had 2 children Victor John and William James. In the 1911 census he is living with his wife called Sarah new in Croydon with 4 children - victor, William but also Edith Winifred and Annie Muriel - it states on the census that they have been married 15 years and have had 5 children. This puts them married at the same time as he married Louisa Elizabeth Henry George marries again in 1920 as a 'widower' I cannot find any deaths or divorces from his first wife or second- nor can I find a marriage to his second wife. Q- Was Louisa really Sarah and vise versa? Q- what happened to the rest of their children Q- Did someone lie to the census people? any ideas or evidence gratefully received! :-D

Maybe they were just living together.
People didnt want others to know their business so they would lie to cover up

Above was just for reference to aid searching.
Sarah, with daughter, Edith in 1901??
1901 England, Wales & Scotland Census Transcription 124, Livingstone Road, Croydon, Surrey, England
Sarah Williams Head Widow Female 33 1868 Laundress Ashwell, Hertfordshire, Eunice Williams Daughter - Female 13 1888 - Catford, Kent, England Sarah Williams Daughter - Female 9 1892 - Catford, Kent, England Edith Williams Daughter - Female 4 1897 - London, England --------------------------------
Edith's birth:
First name(s) EDITH WINIFRED Last name WILLIAMS Birth year 1896 Birth quarter 3 District LAMBETH County London Volume 1D Page 324 --------------------------------------------------------
There is no record of marriage for Sarah and Henry- it looks as though they were living as man and wife- one or both were probably still married.

not a child Sarah but a child of Sarah who is living as Henrys wife in 1911
i looked for a possible birth for Edith born Croydon and the one surname ward looked likely but 1901 census ruled that one out
seems you already now her surname anyway ie Williams :-)

thanks all. you star Austin, I think you cracked it. In 1901 Henry lived at 128 Livingstone road so Sarah was a neighbour who lived at 124 so it appears that Henry at some point when Louisa left or died moved in with Sarah and her children and they assumed his name without marrying?

Oh please, this has been bugging me for years. Apparently my granddad said he remembered having her pointed out to him in the street as his 'step mum' - if you could find anything I know my family would be grateful;. Info I have on her is as follows Born Louisa Cole, in 1878 He rname morphed into Cole bex on her marriage cert. This appears to be because something happened and she was then passed to her aunt Mary Ann Cole (widowed) who had married a James Issac Bex . This would explain why Louisa is also known as Louisa Cole-Bex. In the 1881 census she appears with her step- brother James Bex for the first time. She is still registered as Louise Cole she then disappears from records in the 1891 census– James goes on to marry my great granddads sister Louisa so the families were joined by more than one marriage in more than one generation :-(
