Find Ancestors

Please could anyone help?
I've been looking for a missing great grandfather named John Buchanan born 1875 married to Annie Diggle Nov 1902. They had my grandmother Eleanor Rose Buchanan (Nellie) Dec 25 1905, thereafter John disappeared. I cannot find any death record for him however six years later in the 1911 census my great grandmother Annie is listed as a widow....
Could this be because she would have rather been considered a widow rather than a divorcee back in the day? Also have checked divorce records of the time nothing there either

Hi,Thank you for your help, I'm not sure where John was born, his father is Samuel. I believe it could be Cheshire area?

the only John I can find on a census with father Samuel seems to have been born in Whitchurch, Shropshire

this is also on a tree on ancestry

incidentally Eleanor Rose was born 1904 not 1905 - birth registered March qtr 1905

Yes it was 1904. I do know he as literally a taboo subject when my Dad was a child.
How would I find out for sure if he was indeed lost at sea? also would his wife be listed as his wife on a death certificate?

this is the only death for john between 1904 and 1911 with the birth 1875 and can't find a birth for this man in area

There seem to be records for Mayo Ireland for his father Samuel if I'm correct

could you get your grandmothers marriage cert. to see if her father is named
