Sue, like you I can't see anything in America or in the travel records. I wonder if they have been so badly mis-transcribed that we simply can't find them in 1881. Maybe we should be looking for later deaths? |

Has anyone tried Scotland's people just incase they ended up there? As the deaths would most likely only be on Scotland's people. |

Might be worth checking the deaths at sea indexes etc. as being a cigar maker it is likely he travelled. |

Not so sure he must have travelled CelticShiv, his wife was a charwoman on the 1871 census - so maybe he just worked in a cigar making place. If he was an employer was his wife likely to be a charwoman? Just a thought :-S |

Where was Sarah born? There is a John and Sarah Smith in the 1881 and 1891 census husbands occupation a tobacconist. Could they of changed surnames for some reason. |

Ether way I think because they disappeared with no finding them elsewhere. A name Chang should perhaps be considered. |

Are you stuggling like me on the new ancestry searches CS? It is pretty useless, most of the functionality has gone. |

Flip I always go back to the old search function. I hate the new search, misses so many possibilities. |
