If you purchase the birth certificate through the GRO online for £9.25 it will hopefully tell you, at least, who his mother is. That way half of your problem is solved and it will help us to trace him. |

Further research has unearthed that Emma Roper is the mother of Herbert Buckenham Roper. Born 26/9/1859. I now have a copy of the Entry of Birth. No indication of who is the father. Interesting that nothing is indicated but leads to the fact that Herbert was illegitimate we have hinted previously. |

I have been researching exactly the same relative for the last year.I am the great grandson of Herbert.I am guessing that your wife is the child of Ernest and Lena. |

Having confirmation it is almost certain that Hezekiah Middleton is the father of Herbert Roper. However as indicated previously mother Emma Roper is confirmed on the birth registry with no father named and choose to retain the Roper name not Middleton. We now research the Middleton name as the likely bloodline as Osborn Roper, Emma's deceased husband died many years prior to Herbert being born. Hezekiah a widower lived with Emma until their deaths in 81 when Emma passed away. |
